What's the point of cleaning brakes ?

So, my front brakes developed a bit of noise lately.
I thought it just might be some dirt and they need cleaning.

I use WD40 o clean just about everything on the bike, except painted areas.
So, with a full can and some rags I liberally sprayed the front rotors....there was a lot of dirt that ran off. I wiped it off with the rag and applied another coating of WD40 for good measure.

When I went out for a test ride, I was shocked at how inefficient the brakes were!

I had almost no stopping power, and had to rely on the rear brake for most of my stopping.

This is utter crap! What's the point of cleaning your brakes if clean brakes work like this ?

My advice...don't ever clean your brakes! Dirty brakes work best!

Re: What's the point of cleaning brakes ?

You're joking, right? Clean the rotors with brake cleaner, not WD-40. Leaving WD-40 on the rotors is your problem, it is a lubricant.
Oh, and armorall the tires while you're doing the seat.

j/k

Well either this is a lame atttempt at trolling, or CBR Riding Fool is living up to his name! If it's true, you're going to need to replace the brake pads and clean the rotors with acetone.

I've always found that the best way to rid the front brakes of a squeak is to remove the brake lever.

Re: What's the point of cleaning brakes ?

you know I was about to do that also when I was putting my rear wheel back on yesterday. I cleaned the rim with WD40 and was about to do the rotor just cause its right there but figured I had brake clear right there so might as well stick with that for the brakes.
