Wow crazy, I won't comment on whether the cop should or shouldn't have pursued that criminal... But all I have to say is that idiot couldn't ride for ****, he would pull away in the straights and get eaten up in the corners by a cop car He should hang up the two wheeled riding right now.

****** if that cop had hit MY bike over like that..........that chase wouldn't have ended like that I can tell ya that much. I don't understand how he kept up with him for so long either, I would think it would have been over before it started.

Wrong.

If the cop had hit you on your bike, the chase indeed would have ended the same way. Either that or you would have gotten your punk ass beat senseless by a bunch of cops, or possibly even shot.

Save the bravado and **** talk for some bubble headed teenybopper who might actually buy it.

Re: Dashboard Camera Video Shows Motorcycle Chase

The first opinion I have on that video is that I was totally amazed the cop was able to tap the bike as gingerly as he did. I know if I was in the cops shoes (as an untrained layman) my adrenaline would've probably resulted in a fatal downing of the biker.

As far as the cops aggressiveness in the pursuit, I'm sure his PD will review the tape and declare whether it was in policy or not as they do in this litigous climate. From my perspective, I would've expected him to call ahead for a road block/spike strip/back up rather than chase that fast for that long.

Just watched it twice again, and not only did they not say that the reason for the stop was speeding, but someone mentioned that he may be the robbery suspect that they were looking for... This was at 1:01..

check the clock on the video it was not really for a long time (4-5 minutes if my memory is correct) and not everyone has spikes in all the cars (some probably have none at all)

Re: Dashboard Camera Video Shows Motorcycle Chase

and another point of view from here:
http://www.laaw.com/prima6.htm

"Controlled Deflation Systems

Once an officer initiates a pursuit, the likely potential outcome of the pursuit is relatively limited: the fleeing vehicle stops or breaks down; escapes; hits something; and/or the pursuing officer(s) hits something. None of these potential outcomes are the ideal. There is a relatively new product on the market that gives officers another option: the controlled deflation system. These systems, commonly called "spike systems," are creating a new conclusion to pursuits.

The spike systems are really quite simple. They consist of a series of hollow spikes placed in the path of the fleeing vehicle (not motorcycles). Once the vehicle travels over the spikes, the hollow spikes pierce the tires and, since the spikes are hollow, they do not result in blowing out the tires. Instead, they allow for a gradual deflation of the tires. This gradual deflation encourages the driver to come to a controlled stop. In the event the driver refuses to stop, the flattened tires will quicken the eventuality that the driver's vehicle will become inoperable.

One new spike system that is enjoying great success is manufactured by "STOP Stick, Inc."(5) The "STOP Stick" system consists of three three-foot lengths of triangular cardboard. Inside each section are many hollow spikes with Teflon tips. An officer can deploy the "STOP Sticks" within about ten seconds.

To date, there have been over seventy successful stops using the "STOP Sticks." Some stops involved vehicles traveling well over 100 miles per hour when they encountered the "STOP Sticks." To date, none of the STOP stick deployments have resulted in any injury or loss of vehicle control."

So Scout,

With your SOP as stated above, are any felonies that occur in the pursuit included in this? In TN, once you accelerate after the blues are on, its a felony (at least one).

Yes, but the authority comes in here (as an equal to a fel. stop):

"c. When the violator constitutes an immediate and continuing hazard and all other efforts to effect apprehension have failed"

It's not necessary for all factors to be in play - as in felony and immediate threat.

BTW, just a sample SOP

My dept.'s SOP is not for public release..
