| Totally crazy idea Okay: flame retardant suit /on
Here's the though, I want to replace my gauge cluster with a flat pannel monitor.
I'm nuts I know.
Here's what I'd be interested in. LED shift lights replace tach. Only issue is mileage for resale and oil changes/maintenance, how can I get around this?
Screen could be used for:
-GPS
-data feedback from pc3
-rear view mirror from camera installed in tail
-race vids from camera installed in nose
Mounting the monitor (probably 7" 12V screen) is easy, I could either leave stock gauges in place and mount over top (swivel maybe?) or remove gauges (this is where the Odometer problem comes into play)
Wiring again is easy.
Here are the problems:
Will the unit be able to handle the vibrations?
Will the bike be able to handle the added strain on the electrical system?
Is there a device small enough to be recorded onto? Look at these little jump drives able to store 1+ GB now, there must be something out there!
I understand this probably isn't for 90% of you out there, I'm bored stupid and was thinking about this lastnight as I was driving along w/o mirrors (i'm too wide and can't see out them anyways!) and though it'd be pretty trick! Maybe even incorporate something like the Veypor aftermarket gauge as one of the programs....
Crazy but original!

the primary use (other than the obvious just to be crazy) would be as a rear view mirror/video capture and recording device. |

Of course check the RC51 forum for some corrupting ideas

| Re: Totally crazy idea I've just begun my planning to mount multiple cameras and a monitor for video capture/rear view also. Hadn't thought of GPS integration or removal of guages so the monitor was going to be smaller, but now I'm curious too.
Rear view camera is easy however I would like to have the video capture camera have sound and speed/tach overlay so I'm looking into that now. |

| Re: Totally crazy idea check out ott-motorcycles.ca they have some cool ideas and packages for video capture.... also, I have seen many SD based video capture recording devices out there that are quite small.... I'm VERY interested in the speed overlay if possible. I'll probably just use an LED tach. Take a look at some of the HUD units that are available too. There is one that has bar graph tach, speed (taken from a different sensor so it's MucH more accurate) and gear.

| Re: Totally crazy idea Like the Revlight but I have a different plan. The 1krr has a tiny, useless cyclops light above the headlights that I plan on removing. The video capture camera will go there. The speed/tach overlay (if I can make it work) will be need to be sent to the video capture feed. I'll have a separate feed to a small (4in?) monitor for rear view.
I'm relooking my layout to see if I can get the GPS/larger monitor in place also. This would take me a lot longer as I'm not in Sheep's league of geekdom. |

You can get a linux machine the size of a pack of wrigleys. Doesn't do video, but you can definitely capture some data.

but the back would be an idea. especially for the side mirror replacements. Just wondering where it'll go. |

| Re: Totally crazy idea http://www.pimall.com/nais/ultraminidvr.html
Little expensive and probably a bit overkill, but it's about what I'm looking at for the video capture. May be able to mount this and a switch to switch between video sources. Don't really need the rear view while on the track or recording the back twisties for posterity.
On the other hand, Lilliput makes a nice 7" touchscreen. I'd like to be able to use the 7" touchscreen to display the tach/speedo/gear selection with video underlay. The ultramini DVR would be there to capture video when wanted.
Maybe I should add this to the "what I want to see on the 06 Blade" thread... |

| Re: Totally crazy idea OK I didn't want to rain on your fun but have a question. You have a 7" touch lcd that has a video feed coming to it, how do you overlay text? This would require either hardware and/or software plus something gathering RPM information Even a split screen front and back camera requires something to combine two video feeds in an intelligent manner. Just some thoughts.

Just some thoughts. | You're not raining on my parade, sheep. Questions will only give me food for thought. Geek makes me happy.
How do I overlay text/gauges/whatever? I don't know. Yet. Could I buy the AimSport deal? Maybe. Will it take me a couple of months, the entire winter, a year to make this work. Who knows? The fun is in the learning and experimenting. I'll probably let the really smart people do the majority of the hard work, buy components that may work and just fill in the blanks.
So far, I've found several DVRs that combine up to four cameras. Granted they're all 4 times the size of the trunk, but if there's a big one, there's got to be a small one somewhere.
Either that, or I'll buy a Goldwing, put my wife on the back with the Channel 7 News camera and ride heavy at Grattan next year. One way or another, I'm going to make this work. Anyone know if they make a high mount exhaust for the 'Wing? |

| Re: Totally crazy idea Hello,
I ride a 929 and already thought about that. It's not easy to do, but is doable.
You can have a 7 inch lcd monitor set up on the bike, as long as it works on 12 volts. The alternator a wreckulator/rectumfryer have plenty of juice for such device, so its not a problem.
About the vibes, it depends on the tyupe of vibes, and quality of the equipment.
about the multifunction monitor, that will be VERY expensive, as you need to do some real programing to integrate all the information you mentioned in only one screen and arrange it in a way that nothing conflicts. Looks more a job to an experienced info/electronic engineer.
Than you have another problem, these LCD's mounted on bikes are very sensible to light variations, so when you see perfectly at night, you see a blank screen in day light, you'll have to adjust the brightness from day to night, and vice-versa. Also direct sunlight will give you a hard time seeing whats in the screen...
I've done the lcd + plus cam rear view mod, to remove those ugly mirrors. It works, but it requires some training till we're confortable.
I've used a 2,5 inch tft monitor, as a 4 inch was too big without removing the gauges. But since the 2,5 seems to be a little small, i'm getting another fairing stay so i can do some changes in the structure and move the stock gauges to another position.
One other thing, you'll need to instal a capacitor between the monitor, and bike wiring, otherwise, the image will flicker with the increase of revs.
The electrical juice is continuous and sensible to alternator output, so higher revs, means higher output, more work to the wreckulator/rectumfryer but the end output is not a perfect stream of juice, still has some oscilations, that you'll notice on the screen or lights. |

| Re: Totally crazy idea Which is a better DVR format, DiVX AVI or MPEG4?
I'm consistently narrowing down my search for mini DVRs and cameras and this is my second stumbling block. The first one being the gauge display.
I think I've solved the LCD brightness (direct sunlight washout) problem by putting the camera in the small (useless) light housing. This allows me to keep my dark windscreen. An LCD brightness of approximately 300-400 nits (see, I already learned something) will keep the visibility of the LCD screen useful in indirect sunlight.
With the hardware issues pretty much solved, all that's left is the details. Of course, the details in this case are the trickiest part. |

| Re: Totally crazy idea Huummmm, sorry to spoil your party, but the real problem is not direct sunlight to the camera. The reall bugger, is the sun reflection on the LCD monitor, as the camera has an autoadjusting device who reacts on higher/lower brightness levels to optimize view.
The LCD becomes indistinct when you have the sun light on your back reflecting on the lcd screen.
When i go in the h/way by the afternoon with the sun on my back i can't see much, but everytime i pass under a bridge or tunnel, there i see perfectly behind has there's no sunlight reflection!
As i said, it's doable, but requires some pratice for daily use. |

| Re: Totally crazy idea I didn't write that clearly. The LCD screen will mount in place of the original instrument panel. The dark windscreen will shield the screen from direct sunlight. |
