You do realize the contradiction here, yes?

Re: On choosing a new motorcycle...

I'd like to thank the saleman that sold me my first bike. I wanted a Super Hawk in the worst way possible as my first bike. He said it probably wasn't the best choice for a first bike. I was so mad when he told me that cause I knew what I wanted and not what he thought I should get. In the end I listened to him and bought the F3 he suggested. I purchased three bikes form that salesman over a 2 1/2 year period. I'm glad he spoke up and helped me out. So IMO I value a saleman who speaks up and suggests such things. I'd hate it if would have gone out an purchased that Super Hawk and then injured or killed myself. There should be more salesman like him and you .

+1 except a lot of folks would say we are still dumb

More food for thought:

Today's 600's are lighter, faster, and more powerful than my 1987 FZR1000. Even those can get you into trouble in a hurry.

I usually make the same speech for modern 600's. I try to steer people towards older 600's when possible.

Side story: A guy comes in a few months ago and starts talking to one of the other guys at the shop. He has obviously ridden in on something and he's looking for some part or another, I forget what exactly, for a "Honda 600". My coworker says "An F4i or an RR?" to which he gets in reply: "What?! Do I look like a chick?" Lots of laughter started pouring out of my office.

People are just ignorant these days.

I think there should be a graduated system, but the diff between 600 and a 1000 for a noob is not much. A HP restriction would eliminate most of the 600 sport bikes on the market. Maybe the Aussie members could help us out. DOes the 250 cc restriction in WA work? or the HP restrictions in NSW or SA?

I guess in the end, the USA and Canada are free and we can kill ourselves if we want too.

In most states of Aus you are limited to a 260cc bike or smaller for the first 2 years of riding (1 year on L(earner) plates, 1 year on P(rovisional) plates). After that you are free to ride whatever you like. QLD has a Q-Ride course. Not exactly sure how it works, but it does allow you to circumvent the 250 period somehow. In NSW they have a LAMS system. This allows L and P platers to ride a bike up to a capacity of 660cc so long as it doesnt rate higher than 150kw per ton. That rules out all the really fast things. View list Here

Re: On choosing a new motorcycle...

I would have to agree with what everybody else said about insurance. A simple explanation of ((600+cc sporbike + full coverage insurance) and rider < 25)) = $4k per year and probably much, much more on insurace alone. I really don't think a lot of people realize that until they make the dreaded call.

That was one of the reasons I had trouble selling my 954 this summer.
