motorcyclists of Mexico City are forwarding this call for help....

We want the world to know how the local government in Mexico City is harrasing and stopping every motorcyclist in a way that resembles the worst days of the Stalinist dictatorship.
Leftist former Mayor Lopez Obrador and Police Chieff Joel Ortega started a witch hunt against every one riding a motorcycle in this city creating a local unrest among the more than 70,000 citizens using this transport either to work, fun or mostly as an alternate way of conmuting in one of the busiest capitals of the world.
--Curent Transit Regulations were writen over 50 years ago--
Far from recognizing the advantages and great results this kind of vehicles have proved around the world, Police Chief Ortega whom by the way, has no prior experience in police work, being an electrical engenier by profession, he claims that motorcycles are driven mainly by "Criminals" in order to justify the increasing crime wave in Mexico City which he is uncapable to stop, pretending to show in the streets"Police muscle" trough the implementation of road blocks all over the city where motorcyclists are stopped and treated like criminals impounding more than 24,000 motorcycles so far.
--There are just a few crimes where a motorcycle was used, however, 3 out of ten crimes in this city where commited or covered by police officers and 70% of the population has been extorted by a policeman-
this is outrageous, and living proof of what a leftist government can do with systems that were suposed to be over when the Berlin wall went down.
We the motorcyclists of Mexico City are forwarding this call for help to the international media, our fellow motorcyclists over the world and to every one with an interest in or with México.
Joel Ortega was installed as Police Chief in a polítical move pretending to place him in a prime position to become México City's next Mayor, a very lucrative place to be.
A massive march will take place here in Mexico City as a respond to the continous agressions and abuse by the local police chief Joel Ortega, this friday 4, thirty motorcycles where stopped when they where on their way to the Harley Davidson Convention in Acapulco, their fault was small enough to require only a $130.00 pesos ticket, some $11.oo US Dollars, however, they where treated at gun point as criminals and retained for more than three hours. This is our situation in Mexico City and abuses like this against motorcyclists happen every day.
Mexico´s City transit regulations, writen in 1947 require motorcycles to drive ONLY in secondary streets, not allowing us to use any freeway and it would require some two hours to travel across the city instead of thirty minutes in an empty freeway at 7 a.m. that friday morning.

I hope things change there soon. No one should be harassed just for riding a motorcycle. Good Luck!

Sounds like they are doing their job. I hate to advocate what sounds like unfair treatment, but given the current laws, it seems as though they are enforcing what should have been enforced previously.

If you consider this as the start of a reform process, they are on the right track. If you want to change the laws so as not to be breaking them, take that up with your local government.
