Calgary International Motorcycle Show observations

Good show, best one in a few years.

Some observations:

1. The MT-01 will be offered in Canada this year... (but still not in the USA ) I can't wait to demo one.

2. THe 06 R6 looks awesome. Coolest-looking sportbike on the market. THe themes there will be imitated for sure. Also, the fairings will be a bitch to take apart / put together.

3. Canada gets the Euro style R1LE in black / greyish blue and I still wouldn't buy one.

4. The pipe on the new FZ1 is the ugliest pipe ever by far... the rest of the bike looks great. So does the FZ6.

5. The Yamaha dirtbikes look great in yellow. They will not be confused with Suzukis on the track.

6. 2006 is Yamaha's year in the spotlight.

7. The ZX14R looks friggin huge in person... looks kinda cool though.

8. The ZX10r looks way smaller in person

9. Buells are gay.

10. KTM's 950 supermoto is cool.

11. I still want a Speed Triple.

12. The 675 Daytona is beautiful to look at... and incredibly narrow.

13. The BMW HP2 dirtbike is ****in awesome.

14. I still want a K1200s

15. Choppers are gay.

16. I really like the 06 1000RR. They only had one on display and it was the all black version. Small detail changes made a huge aesthetic difference. Examples: black case covers, black front caliper mounts, cleaned up exhaust and shields, no more fake front scoops. That, plus the fairly substantial weight decrease (17 lbs) and significant hp increase (5 or 6) could definitely make it the litre bike to beat this year.

17. The new Gixxer 600 and 750 look very good.

18. The top level Suzuki power cruiser is FUGLY! Boulevard 103 or some damn thing. Whatever, it's hideous.

19. I'm signing up for 2 different local track schools this year.

20. I want a 50cc Ruckus (white please)

21. Biker sluts are gross

More to come when I remember.

Re: Calgary International Motorcycle Show observations

I would echo your comments after attending the Toronto show. Since the original R1 in '99 Yamaha has led the styling exercise, the new R6 has the cosmetics to take the lead again. However it may be more show than go, as the hp/torque curves look to be stronger on the '06 Gix6 through low and mid range, and the R6 cant get anywhere near the 17.4K redline. The 675 maybe the sleeper, with only 3 cylinders it is Ducati 'like' narrow, whether the motor and the chassis perform as well as the Jap bikes remains to be seen. Gix6 and 750 look good as well, and adjustable footpegs offers more legstretch if needed.

I'm waiting for the second generation to come out... see if they're able to work out the bugs. Maybe they can make it a little easier on the eyes too... but this is BMW.

Re: Calgary International Motorcycle Show observations

Yeah good metaphor, they'll probably argue that in full out race trim the motor can handle those revs. I'll give em credit for having a race kit ready to buy. These 600's at 355 lbs dry, drop a set of race forged mag. wheels on em and a full titanium pipe and you're down to under 335lbs. If you're looking for a track bike either the R6 and Gix6 look good but enuf already about the +17K redline when none of the dynos can reproduce same.
