| In a bad place and need advice I was on my way to Palms Springs for the evening with some fellow riders, and they decided to go down a strech of highway I had opposed earlier. Never the less we took the 62 and there is this one section about five miles long that is extremely gusty. You offten see trucks pushed over and a couple months back a double wide house was blow over. Ive riden this section a few times and though it was nerve racking its easy to get through. What we hadnt planned on was the 70 mph winds there were that day. Oh and these are cross winds anyways the other two guys pass a semi on the left and when its my turn and I start to pass him. I leave the little blurble I was in and got a ton of wind blast, then it was amplified by the right to left cross wind. I knew I was going to be pushed a fair amount so I started in the right third of the lane, and as soon as I passed him I was all the way over to the left andon the white line, I no joke had my butt off the seat and knee slightly hanging out trying to compensate and giving it all kinds of lean, but the wheels touched dirt. I tried to ride it out but between the bushes, 2x4's, rocks and all kinds of road debris I was able to over come the wheel wobble, but was bouncing around to much to control my course. I didnt want to end up facing head on traffic, so I got on the rear brake and turned to the right laying it down ever so gently while I went for the wildest tumble in my life. The bike has about 2200 in damage but Im not sure if I should try to fix it of if I should part it out. Unfortunatly I only have liability and Uninsured motorist to cover hit and runs, and theft. Im not sure what I should do with the bike now. I hate to consider parting it out but I dont have almost 3000 at my desposal right now. Any thoughts or ideas? Oh and while we were picking my bike up a group of Harleys were heading the same way, three of the dozen or so did the samething I did. All older gents who were able to walk away from it. The CHP officer said it was his third time that day responding to bikers being pushed off the road. Any ideas would be helpful! Thanks

Oh, and I've been out there on those sidewind roads. Man, that's some hectic crap. I had bike leaned at close to a 45 degree angle going straight, on my Bandit with the SO on the back for about 10 miles. That was crazy!
Glad you're okay!

| Re: In a bad place and need advice whew, first off, it's really bad to read about your loss. second off, i'd part it out as well. not to insult your pride and joy but, a 99 cbr 900 crashed and rebuilt would probably resell for a little more than the cost in damages it has. why spend the energy doing it unless it has strong sentimental value?.... just my |

| Re: In a bad place and need advice You can make some good $ parting it out on ebay. I have done this with two other bikes. I made more money in parts than I could have selling it as a perfect used bike. |

| Re: In a bad place and need advice It really all depends upon just how bad the damage is. The bike I Drag was a real peice of garbage. Not any more though. (I really need to get some more pics up.)
If you decide to go the parting route get in touch with me. I'm sure you have a ton of parts I would like to get a hold of.
Basically I would just like to get the bike and tear into into it myself. Motor, frame, harness, etc. would be a great help to someone always looking for spare parts. |

| Re: In a bad place and need advice Yeah, if the engine and frame are straight, start scouring for used stuff, you might be pleasantly surprised.
If $2200 was a dealer estimate with labor, you'll do wayyyy better than that. |

| Re: In a bad place and need advice Well, first off, Glad to hear you did'nt get too banged up yourself. Sounds like a lot worse could have happened to you. As for the bike........ I would have to say that parting it out may put you in the best position. I'm sure its an extremely hard decision to make. But try to look at the situation as something long-term. Are you going to get your money back out of the bike and enjoy it for some time to come, if you invest in the repairs? If not and your in no situation to financially afford a replacement, part the leftovers out, collect the money from your cancelled out insurance policy if your pre-paid and add it up. Put it in safe keeping while you call it quits for a few months and save some $ towards getting something you will be happy with. My . Sorry to hear of your mis-fortune. Good luck. |

The only thing I cant sell because it broken, but some plastics are just fine, The engine frame (polished) swingarm (chromed) brand new Ek chain(200mi) Gauge cluster that reads 13800 approx. I just dont really have a place to let parts sit for months at a time. Make a list because .org members get first dibs and best prices. Titile is still clean on the frame too! |

Thanks all. While this has shaken my desire to ride I will not stop. I might not ride for the rest of the season but when I do get back into it Im going all the way back to the basics. There is a rumor that I will be going on a West Pac. A kind of deployment where Im on a ship the enitre time. WhenI get back and have saved some money I was thinking about getting a newer Ducati Monster. Am I crazy for thinking this? Again Thank You all! |

In fact if you look in some of my pics you cant really tell its polished but I took some Mothers Mag to it and BAM I was shaving in the frame the next morning. Im not a huge polished bike fan like some but it was alright. |

Aren't all naked bikes with a single round headlight from the early '80s? |

Just poking a little fun at my wife, who thought the Monster in her parking lot at work was an older bike.

Seems as though it would be a good idea for you to stick with a good used bike...... maybe an SV650. If you don't end up going on the West Pac, this is the perfect time to get back on the horse. I'm sure we could get you hooked up with some experienced people to ride with. | |
