| Stupid Question...what's a steering damper? Ok i'm new to the sportbike scene, been riding dirtikes my whole life but finally made the switch. Now this may sound like a dumb question but keep in mind I'm new at this. What does a steering damper do?! I kee hearing things about them both good and bad and i was wondering what the low down on them is. |

The search function works very well for this It keeps your steering under control during times of heavy acceleration to help minimize the risk of a tankslapper. |

| Re: Stupid Question...what's a steering damper? It damps the steering thus it will damp out an oscillation like a tank slapper. The only down is that it damps movement thus making your bars a bit harder to move (most are adjustable)
Oh and this is not nearly as stupid of a question as a mod putting a link to new posts instead of the real target
Just kidding ND4SPD and the question was well formed and polite f1_hurricane so I see nothing stupid about it. DISCLAIMER but I am not a mod nor do I play one on the org |

You may also notice a really cool tool at the bottom of the page that auto searches the thread you are in for similar topics.

| Re: Stupid Question...what's a steering damper? So for your interest I have a '97 Yamaha YZF600r & it is not with a steering head stabalizer as it is not near the peaky engine of the R6 of the bike from '99 & on.
The '00 Honda 929 is with a Scotts seering head damper & the '03 Honda 954 still in the crate in August of '04 is with a GBR------both are rotary & have done a darn good job. No stiffness in the steering or you name it.
After all the Honda CBR1000 comes with a factory fitted electronically controlled steering head stabalizer/damper.
If you go back in history of Brit & European m/c from right after WWII till the Jpn bikes took over anything from 350cc & up were fitted with a manual steering head stabalizer to even the factory road racing bikes & yes the dirt comp irons, to even some of the smaller 175cc bikes from the Continent though in the latter it was more or less a sort of fad they felt had to be put on.

| Re: Stupid Question...what's a steering damper? My 64 Honda Superhawk roadracer had a manual crank down friction device on the steering head. Sort of brute force, but it worked pretty well as long as you didn't try to ride around in the paddock . . . |
