Re: Interesting safety article

Hmmm...interesting.

Myth 10: It's Better to Stay in Your Lane than Split Lanes
In most parts of the world, motorcycles split lanes all the time, everywhere traffic is heavy. Here in the U.S., people often act as if lane-splitting is insane. But when someone actually studied it in the only place in the U.S. where it's legal (California), they discovered it's actually slightly safer than staying in the lane in heavy, slow-moving traffic. Still many motorcyclists berate others who do it, when they should in fact be endorsing it.

Myth 1: Running around with your high beams on is a good way to get a ticket in NH. Most cops will ignore it...unless they're having a bad day.

"It's actually the un-helmeted rider who is likely to cross from animal to vegetable kingdom, and often from a relatively minor impact that would have damaged nothing but his ego if he'd been wearing a DOT helmet. "

and snell may even mean you stay animal AND able to ride

Question .... can you "back it in" with the rear brake on an ABS bike?

I've actually (intentionally even) used that to get a bike turned to avoid a major incident. Not something I would recommend getting yourself in a position to do, but nice to have the option.

Also know ABS in the dirt/gravel or some snow (in a car) will take longer to stop because they keep unlocking and rolling over that pile you were building in front. Experience this in my Bronco (4 wheel ABS) on my dirt road.

Good for Art Friedman, the grandfather of the orange helmet. That should drive some of the ABATE anti-helmet liars over the edge.

Myth #1:

"You're riding one of them "murder-cycles", cruisers are much safer."

Trust me, our brothers(?) and sisters in little leather vests think we are destined for a body bag just because we have a motorcycle which actually out-turns, out-accelerates, and out-breaks their motorized lawn chairs - Fact: BECAUSE they themselves feel they lack the self-control to responsibly ride one.

Case in point - who hasn't heard "I'd kill myself on one of those"?

Which leads me to my next myth:

Myth #2:

"I'd kill myself on one of those!"

No. The throttle turns both ways, and arguably steers and brakes better. Oh, and when we get together, it's to ride, not drink and socialize and then attempt to ride home. Fact: You'll kill yourself without "one of those".

Myth #3:

"Only kids ride those things."

whatever.

Myth #4:

"Those things are uncomfortable. Don't you gotta bend waaay over?"

Yes, they are not made for comfort so to speak, but it's hard for me to believe wrapping my boots into some forward mounted - wide birthing stirrups, and resting all my weight on my tailbone, while holding my arms at or above shoulder level is an ergonomic solution to comfort. Fact: The low screens allow most of our weight to be pushed back just enough to ease pressure off wrists and arms, while at freeway speeds. Leg's can be stretched every fill up. Any other time? Well, that's why you don't see us cruising the boulevard (often)...

BDA- I know you didn't ask me.

Obivously we didn't read the same set of Myths.

Funny thing is this weekend there was a poker run. Must be called that cause they we all "pokin" a long. Guess where most of the stops were? That's right, BARS. Now, guess who were 99.9% of paricipants? Oh so right, cruiser, mostly harley and corner mill chopper rider's. This is what the general public often sees, not the crotch rockets rocketing past them at light speed.

Anywho, nothing new here.

True dat. And like I say when with them, we are here for the spirit of the ride. Seems to quell that side of things. Have met some really great cruiser people as well. Old saying, "don't judge a book by its cover".

Exactly...

Sometimes I think we mistakenly lump people into "cruisers" and "crotch rockets" when neither side has a monopoly on idiocy...

I think what we really intend to discriminate against is under-educated riders...
