| Metal in tire OK, I went for my first good ride in weeks today and at some point ended up with a very thin piece of metal in my week old rear tire.
it was pretty much paper thin, went from 1/4 inch wide to about 1/2 inch wide over the inch or so it went into the tire.
It seemed to go in at a very shallow angle, it pulled out of my nicely heated up tire very easily and smoothly and doesn't seem to have gotten into the carcass at all.
At first I thought to myself that it didn't go deep enough to do any real damage or cause me any issues but after spending a couple hours in the twisties and then coming home it has been popping into my head over and over.
Should I worry about it and replace the tire or should I monitor it and if the area starts to tear then worrry about it?
I have never had anything go wierd with tires before other than normal wear and replace so I am not sureif I should really worry about this or not.

| Re: Metal in tire I've got to say, if I were you, and there was not an obvious "split" where the object entered, and it didn't enter the tire past the threads, I might just monitor it - of course, I buy with road hazard on my tires, so I would have replaced it....
Go with your gut feeling though. Only you know what you should do.

| Re: Metal in tire No kind of raod hazard stuff available on bike tires that I know of here.
I know it didn't go deep enough to get past the tread part of the tire but there is an obvious tear on the surface.
A couple pics of what it looks like after going about 70 miles after I got the metal in it and took it out.
I think I am more concerned about the fact that I was not worried about it and maybe I should be.

| Re: Metal in tire I would ride with it also (I've rode on a plug for many thousands of miles before without issue).
if you're really worried take it off and inspect the inside of the tire (I doubt you'll see anything as you said you don't think it went that far in). could give you a little piece of mind though.

If it keeps distracting you from riding, replace it so you can keep your mind on the ride. |

| Re: Metal in tire Instead of replacing it and burning 120+ on a new one. I'd suggest going out and buying tire sealant. I had something puncture a small hole in my rear tire a couple weeks ago, and I went out and bought this tire sealant. Don't remember what its called, but its green and CAN be used on motorcycle tires. Just read the package, because I know they make different kinds for cars/trucks. I bought mine at Wal-Mart so you might went to check there, or an auto parts store should have it. Just so you know that you have to drain the air out of the tire first. Then apply the sealant, and put air back into it. |

| Re: Metal in tire No no no. No sealants.
That stuff throws everything out of balance. Not only that, it's supposed to only be a temp fix. |

| Re: Metal in tire that tire sealant is made by Slime SLIME - Smart Solutions for Flat Tire Prevention & Repair!
I wouldn't use it on any vehicle. remember when you put that crap in its not just coating the tire, its also coating your wheel too. so when you go to put the next tire on you have a shitload of crap to clean off your wheel.
