| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? Depends on what you mean by down...I fell over in the grass going about 5-10 mph and I also flipped and tipped myself twice with my disk lock on. |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? The only reason that I said dirt doesn't count, is because everyone has gone down on dirt. Some people drop it everytime they go out.
Not because it doesn't hurt.
I think that he was asking about going down on the street. |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? Never down on the track yet... then again my last track day was in 1992 .
For four years I worked as a courier on a scooter and a few other bikes, mainly a Yamaha XT600. I fell many times, too many to remember. Ended up at the hospital 5 times. A few broken bones here and there... nothing too serious.
My worst injury was doing a hand stand showing off in front of my step brother. At 36 a broken collar bone, dislocated shoulder and a bunch of torn ligaments show you that to hurt yourself you don't need a bike. I guess I could've learned that earlier uh? |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? I rode 20 years before my first official pavement inspection assignment. No, I did not volunteer. I was approaching an intersection on the green in the rain when a crosstraffic cager forgot to stop for his red. I hit the brakes and the front started sliding, I corrected but we were still going to occupy the same physical space in the universe at the same time, so when I reapplied with more squeeze on the front brake I went down but managed to slide past the rear of his car with about a foot to spare. That was right in front of the entrance to Charleston Naval Hospital in Chas, SC for those who know the area.
I rode another 17 years before my Interceptor and I tried a barrel roll maneuver on a Wisconsin alphabet road after coming upon some gravel in a turn.
Two years later I decided to take it to the track where I shattered my heel with the engine off and 0mph, but it was still a motorcycle accident because the bike fell on me.
One year later I took it to the track again. It was a humid misty day...(sorta sounds like the intro for 'It was a dark and stormy night doesn't it? ) at Road Atlanta. Lap times were falling all day, as was the mist. Last session though, I washed the front at turn 5 and got myself a nice ICU bed for the night, 6 broken ribs, two fingers and Kevin a new SV needing repairs from me.
If I had stopped riding after 19 years, I would have had an impressive record! But why would I stop???
In 40 years, 4 temporary inconveniences to riding amortized over time says I have another nine years before the next incident.
Most motorcyclists know that this sport is not without risks. We accept those risks.
As for the first being therapeutic as luv says, I wholeheartedly agree! I nearly got an ulcer after 19 years worrying, waiting and wondering when the first one was gonna happen. Save yourself the misery by not fully deploying your sidestand and get off the bike this afternoon.
With all that said, I'll wager Smitty has never been down. |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? First 5k miles I crashed about every 1k miles. Turns out these things are a lot different than dirtbikes....try telling that to a 16 year old though. Finally learned and havent been down in 8 years and 70k miles. But I dont focus on crashing, I focus on not crashing. |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? Yes, I am one of those statistics of people buying a bike and laying it down after several months of owning it. I guess it was actually 8 months but who is counting.
Isn't it said that their are two kinds of riders, one's that have had an accident and ones' that are going to have an accident?
Now I have rode a dirt bike and street bike for many years and not had an issue, but it goes to show that it is everyone's time sooner or later...... |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? Does it count if you've come to a complete stop, then lose your footing and tip over? I did that a few times when I was learning on that top heavy '82 Yamaha XS650, and once when I got the FZR600 because I wasn't used to brakes that good! It stopped quick and those lousy stock springs compressed a lot, and I lost my balance! |

| Re: Has anyone NEVER been down? Like everyone else I have been down too a few times as a matter of fact.
But I thought my Friend had a funny History;
He's going on 50 and has been riding since 14. Completly crash free for 33 years he got hit on his Repsol on the way back from seca last year. Duc Rider next to him was cheacking out the Repsol and forgot to keep an eye out for traffic ahead rear-ended a camry and the bike spun out into our lane took out my friend and his wife.
Three weeks later went down on the track at Fontana and messed up his ZX-10 bad he was fine though.
Two weeks after that a 17 year old girl (thinking stop sign was for street decoration) blew the sign and t-boned my friend on his Vulcan.
Two weeks after that back on the track in Fontana he wiped out first lap second turn.
Since then only a few close calls with his boss hoss.
General stats 33 years no problem
Last three Months 4 Serious Accidents 3 Bikes Totaled, only injurt overstretched quad. |
