| I need to weld a nut Ok not my nut but a nut on the back of my forks. The track bike I just bought has had the one and only Pinch bolt (under the axle) stripped. I tried working with the Heli-coil kit but had less faith in it the more I worked with it. Now my new theory is to try and have a nut welded on the backside of the fork. Than run a long enough bolt through. Any thoughts on this? Is it safe to weld on the fork? Should I try and tap the hole to the next size bolt? It was an M8 x 1.25. (goto a M9?) |

| Re: I need to weld a nut Tap it all the way through using the same size tap and use a longer bolt? If it is stripped all the way through then just slap a nut on the end sticking out and safety wire it?
Edit... take it to a machine shop for professional heli coiling |

Edit... take it to a machine shop for professional heli coiling | Good call. But safety wiring a nut could be tricky I think. I have done the heads of bolts but not a nut. Is that possible? |

| Re: I need to weld a nut Probably not the best fix, but you could use a castle nut until a permanent repair or replacement....

| Re: I need to weld a nut Or nylon lock nut. Or Red Loctite. Or a cotter pin beyond the nut to keep it from backing of (still could loosen) Or a cotter pin through the bolt and nut (would prevent torqueing though) |

| Re: I need to weld a nut I think what Bake was saying is that you put a long bolt all the way through, put a castle nut on the end and drill a hole in the bolt and slide a cotter pin in (just like how Suzuki does their rear axles). you could also safety wire the bolt/nut instead of using the cotter pin if you choose.
and of course throw some red loctite on there.
