So I just renewed my insurance........

I sold my 2002 CBR954RR a few months ago but didn't bother to cancel the insurance because it runs out in September anyway. So now I just have my 1984 Honda Nighthawk and it's time to renew the insurance. I only ride the bike occasionally and just carry the minimum liabilty insurance so it's only $91 a year. The $91 consists of $64 for Uninsured Motorist, and the remaining $27 is for the general coverage. Basically if I wanted to waive the uninsured motorist part of the policy I could get liability insurance for $27 a year....which I guess is a pretty good deal. But doesn't it seem out of whack that uninsured motorist coverage is almost 3 times the regular policy amount? How many uninsured motorists are there out there....and how much of a threat do they represent??

Alot.

A very large one!

If they don't have insurance what are the chances of them stopping if they were to hit you?

You go to jail if you have an accident and no insurance in PA so........

You hit car -> leave dent and get severely hurt, low liability
Car hits you -> injuries and expensive

Just a guess

Yes, I guess you're right. The $27 for the general liabilty is unlikely to claim large expenses. It's rare that a motorcyclist causes huge amounts of damage to other road users. But if a (uninsured) car hits me injuries are likely to be severe, even if the "replacement" cost of the bike would be small.

But, I would have assumed that the number of uninsured motorists is small, maybe 2%-5% of the road-using population....that's why I thought the uninsured motorist fee was proportionately "large". Let's face it if I get hit by an insured motorist then I am covered anyway, so the uninsured motorist fee is only to cover the 2%-5% of uninsured motorists (assuming those percentage figures are correct).

I guess there are more uninsured motorists than I thought....or maybe the insurance companies are using this as a means to pad their rates using "scare tactics" (Insurance companies would do that, would they!!!!! )

Dude you are in cali. You know how many illegals are out there on the street, DRIVING? Guess what, NO INSURANCE. And in this great country even though they are here illegally, they are not licensed you could still be screwed.

KEEP it, its cheap and when you need it, you will so wish you had it. People don't even have to be illegals. My last accident this dude flipped a bitch in front of me, showed a proper insurance ID. Turns out, he wasn't really covered. Uninsured covered everything and went after him.

KEEP IT.

Yes, I agree that it shouldn't be 3 times the normal rate but with the number of unisured in this state.

Re: So I just renewed my insurance........

Anytime you can't locate or identify the owner of the vehicle that crashed into you, they count that person as an "uninsured motorist". So, it's not just the number of people who don't have insurance that the insurance company is concerned about (they've taken care of that by mandating insurance). Their only concern is the number of cases where the insurance company might be forced to pay out $$$. If someone without insurance crashes into you, the insurance company will try to sue them to recover the costs, rather than just pay you. But they can't do that if they can't find the other vehicle or its owner.

Re: So I just renewed my insurance........

I hear you guys.....I would definitley keep the uninsured motorist part of the policy. Especially as the total annual premium is so low. I was just bitching about the fact that uninsured motorist is even necessary......or should I say advisable.....and that we have to pay a relatively high premium for it.

Maybe we should go back to the system we used to have in California. Vehicle insurance was not mandatory........and if you wanted to be fully protected you got Comprehensive insurance?????

We pay the high premiums for uninsured and underinsured because of all the people out there driving that fit these catagories.

A little scary.

Re: So I just renewed my insurance........

Without getting into facts and numbers and statistics, I'll give my opinion.

Its less then $100- for the year. To have piece of mind to know you are on the road and reasonably covered should be the only answer you need. With that being said, I say keep your policy instated just how it is. Good luck in your decision.

Agreed..........

I'm in PA too, and some areas around here are just filled with with numbers reflecting the under-insured and un-insured ass wipes that all cause everyones rates to be higher then I feel is right.

Allthough I cant complain very much. I have full coverage, full tort, above average medical & property coverages, through State Farm and compared to some others, my premium is a blessing.
