| Ever made a bad deal? Share it with us for others to learn Okay so like all newbs I get the call from the guy who I'm about to by my first bike from . I'm all kinds of excited and roaring to go. We are going to meet at one of my buds houses since he knows about bikes. So I get there. Bright orange, chrome stickers I'm about to wet myself trying to contain myself. I walk around it point out some scrapes, scratches you know the minor things that you do to make the guy feel as if you are doing him a favor by buying the item. Problem... I have no gear, no license, and no time at all on a sports bike. So I have my fella take it for a ride. Comes back says rides nice, plenty of pep sounds solid so I bite....
Now here is what I know about the bike. Once I got home I noticed that on the title it says REBUILD, lots of broken/cracked plastic that I have overlooked when trying to be so good at pointing it out. low fuel indicator doesn't work, take off the plastic right side crankcase cover is cracked and filled with god knows what, loads of electrical splices that I had to clean up, new rear tire needed right away, front needed not long after, rear brake pads, work on rear caliper, new chain, sprockets. So now all said and done by really nice cheap bike has turned into a really nice not at all cheap bike.
The good news, all was easy to fix on mine so to an extent I guess I'm lucky that at least the engine, trans are good |

I got the 929 in June of 2001 with .3 miles (set up only) for $7999.00. Plus, they threw in an Arai helmet, Honda jacket (that did not fit me or match my '01 colors) and a Kryptonite chain. I was lucky, and mentioned I was a veteran. If I had waited until mid September, I probably would have been paid to take it... |

| Re: Ever made a bad deal? Share it with us for others to learn "knocked off the set up fee and gave me a free helmet bag" LoL that totally sucks. Sorry she bent you over like that. Some friend. Maybe her boss was being a jerk about the price?
Worst deal I ever saw made was by two friends who were brothers. They so badly wanted a 1969 Mach 1 Mustang that they ended up buying a complete rust bucket. The A-pillars were rusted through and only the paint was holding it together. They paid like $2,500 for it 20 years ago. It was worth $1,000 tops. They ended up having a body shop replace a ton of steel panels on the car and it still had rust after that even. So sad.

| Re: Ever made a bad deal? Share it with us for others to learn My bad deal was buying the extended service contract. My first service went good, but the second was a disaster at $750. They mounted a new tire, but didn't balance it even though they charged for it. The bike shook me into a tank slapper the first bump I hit on the highway. I asked for some weights so I could balance it myself, but they DIDN'T HAVE ANY.
I bought a manual and quickly learned how to do all my servicing after that. I passed up all the "free" oil changes afraid they would botch something else. If I ever make a mistake, I'll have no one but myself to blame and I like it that way. |

| Re: Ever made a bad deal? Share it with us for others to learn Not so much a "Bad Deal" I've learned not to do "knee jerk" or impulse purchases. Sometimes it's not better in the long run.
Here's mine:
Had a '01 BMW 330Ci and '02 954 this time last year. Owed about $8,500 on the 330Ci and $5,300 on the 954. Insurance not that bad on the 2. Had about 36k miles on the bimmer and 9k(& steadily growing) on the 954, since I was transferring out of Hawaii and purchasing a house here in Washington I couldn't afford both of the toys.
It always comes down to money, so I put the 954 up for sale . And figured since I actively Auto-X the 330Ci I'd get something newer and faster, so I got an Evo IX. Due to dealer "availability adjustment" and the like on the Evo my almost 10K of positive equity on the bmw went towards the down payment on the Evo. Ended up financing $27K. Regardless the Evo was fricken awesome, but insurance cost more than the 954 and 330Ci combined. Overall (payment+insurance) the Evo was about $300 cheaper than the 2 other toys combined.
So I move up to Washington and turns out I cannot afford to keep the Evo+mortgage. Had to sell it. So went to trade in the Evo and lo-and-behold I'm backed into a corner and can't sell the Evo for more that $27K. So al the positive equity from the 330Ci poof up in the air, gone. Now I drive a '01 GMC Jimmy instead of a 330Ci. & with no toys in the garage...... Yet.....
Although, for a beginning homeowner the Jimmy does helps out with the hauling and parts. Sigh.... That's my story. I've got a couple of others but this one's the best. I think we all get the ohhh... shiny!! syndrome at some point and it helps to take a good wingman with you. Hopefully one that has the strings to the "coin purse". Highly recommend that you go informed or be a phone call away to someone that has the internet for a KBB/Edmunds/Carfax check for you.
My $.02 anyway
Aloha,
Ian |
