My dads GZ250

My dad wanted to buy a bike to ride aroud with me and just to have some fun on so he bought a 2005 GZ 250. However there is one problem the bike wont start unless the clutch is pulled in. The clutch doesnt have to even be the whole way in, its kid of like a certain spot right before its completely pulled in. Why is this and is there a fix to it?
Thank you

Re: My dads GZ250

Clutch lockout switches have been a factory standard for a long time. Its supposed to be that way.
If the bike is in neutral with the kickstand up, it should start without touching the clutch.
If the bike is in gear, it will not start unless you pull the clutch in. If its in neutral, but on the sidestand, you will have to pull in the clutch as there is also a sidestand lockout/kill switch.

Re: My dads GZ250

We tried starting with kickstand up and down and the bike was in neutral both ways and the clutch still had to be pulled in. But when you turn the bike on not running just on the neutral light isnt on. Do you have to move the shifter at all to make the bike be in neutral? Could it possibly be another safety feature to make you check if its in neutral?

Re: My dads GZ250

If the neutral indicator light is not on, then its not in neutral, so yes you would need to hold in the clutch and bump the shift lever to get to neutral.

I dont think I am making myself clear. There is an interlock on the clutch lever. This is the same as a kill switch connected to the clutch lever. Consequently, the ignition circuit is not capable of being activated unless the clutch lever is pulled in. You can start the bike in neutral with the clutch lever pulled in and the kickstand down. There is another interlock on the kickstand. If you put the bike in gear and let out the clutch lever without raising the kickstand, the kickstand interlock then kills the ignition circuit. This is so you cant ride off with the kickstand down. Your bike is normal, theres nothing wrong with it.
