| Re: If you speed on the road... Saw those on a bikeweek forum. The truck might not have jumped out in front of him but another car he was swerving to miss might have. Yeah he musta been hauling ass but **** happens. It's still sad. Some cager almost got me the other night by turning across a 4 lane highway right in front of me. If there had been a car beside he he would have. |

| Re: If you speed on the road... From what I can confirm the group was clicking along about 100 or so mph and he decided to grab a handful of throttle and squirt off to the front. Best estimate was that he nailed that truck at 145 to 160. the impact was so hard that it shook the truck driver to the point where he thought a car or pickup had slammed into him. This incident spurred a couple of news stories locally with the kids family and friends being interviewed, some of the usual news media exagerations about sport bikes and some 1/2 truths from the very young inexperienced peer group he rode with. He himself was a new rider and had just attended the funeral of another friend a month prior to this. Personally unless you get some sick enjoyment from posting or looking at pictures of this type your not gonna change anyone's riding style face it a month previous he was at a funeral of another rider caused by excessive speed.
There was no other traffic on that stretch of 8 lane divided at that time of day it was around 2am, He misjudged his rate of closure. |

| Re: If you speed on the road... I dont think twisting the throttle had anything to do with it. The rider fixated on the pole he didnt want to hit and thats where he went. Like the MSF course says, "look where you want to go". Or, to put it another way, you will always go where you're looking.
Its pretty simple. If you dont want to run off the road, dont steer it there. :-)

| Re: If you speed on the road... Agreed, its no crime to have been stupid, but it sure isnt a good thing, heheh
Instead of that truck being there, it could have been you cruising along at the speed limit on a leisurely, late night cruise about. This guy would have slammed into the back of your bike at 160 mph. He had no consideration for the rights or safety of anyone else on the road. I already have enough people on the road that try to take me out everyday. I cant find any sympathy for someone that would have killed me if they had the opportunity.

it's sad to see common sense isn't so common |

it's sad to see common sense isn't so common | Funny you should say that about getting a bike as a graduation gift. This kid just got a 1K the other day brand new for getting into some medical school. He totaled it the 2nd day he had it but didn't hurt himself. Hopefully he doesn't want any more bikes. Now I know why my dad sold his last GSX-R on the day I turned 16. |

| Re: If you speed on the road... I read somewhere that this was also about 1am. Come on people, riding over 120 at 1am in traffic? Save it for the track.
I'm a wuss, I don't even ride at night because there are deer and idiots galore.
I do most of my twistie riding at 5am on Sunday, by 10am the church crowd is out and I'm heading home... |

| Re: If you speed on the road... I was reading some insurance co. statistics a couple of weeks ago. The average lifespan of a new GSXR1k, R-1, CBR1k, etc is about 4 days. Now, we know why full coverage insurance is so expensive, and some companies will not underwrite motorcycles. Quote:

| Re: If you speed on the road... I was just surfing, not looking for that in particular, so I dont know that I could find the page again. Seems about right to me though. Most of the accidents are new owners/riders with big bore "learner" bikes. How many salesmen have you listened to trying to sell an R-1, Busa, etc to someone that hasnt been on a bike in 25 years or just got their motorcycle endorsement? How many young riders have to have the biggest and baddest for their first bike? I'm surprised a lot of them live as long as four days. Quote:

| Re: If you speed on the road... I agree, its crazy. However, look at what HCCA said. The fella had the bike two days before he totaled it. Thats not two days of riding. Thats probably an hour or so of experience stretched over two days. I wouldnt cover any bets for a newly licensed rider lasting over two hours riding time in traffic on a liter bike. On average in Tampa traffic, I figure I have to make a decision and avoid a traffic confrontation (crash) about every 2 or 3 minutes, sometimes more. | |
