What Kind of Gas Do you put in your bike?
So, I was talking with my friend yesterday, and I mentioned that I put premium gas in my bike. He says that he puts regular in his bike, and we kind of had this argument about which is better for the bike, him arguing that premium dirties the engine faster and my argument being it lets you get the most out of your engine. Any thoughts?

Higher octane does burn slower. Think about that.

I use regular. I believe that's what the owner's manual states. I doubt putting in premium will hurt. I used to run premium in it, particularly on the track, but with gas prices what they are, I went back to regular and I can't tell a difference in performance.

Re: What Kind of Gas Do you put in your bike?
Once you reach an octane level that allows the bike to run the maximum ignition advance curve without detination, then you're golden. Running any higher octane above that, is purely a waste of money. Premium running more "dirty" than regular is pure weapons grade BS.

I use reg in my bike. Sometimes i use premium, but when i had my bike on the dyno i tested with premium and with reg. There was a tad more power with the reg petrol.

Now that is totally surprising to me. I would expect it to be the same at best or less with regular at worst. I wonder why you got less hp with Premium?

That's the way it should be. These are short stroke engines and that particular fuel is designed to burn slower.
If it burns cooler, deposits might build up as I discovered after a 45,000 mile teardown which had significantly increased compression due to nearly 1mm of deposits on the piston, head, and valves. From what I saw, it might be possible to create more horsepower with years of increased octane at an increased risk of detonation. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
After cleaning that combustion chamber varnish, I'm back to using the cheap gasoline.

Re: What Kind of Gas Do you put in your bike?
You can put crappy gas that is 93 (R+M)/2 rated octane and it'll gum up your engine the way dattaway describes. The new gasohol should help out if you use Premium premium. Shell and BP/Amoco are the two best formulations out there, the slightly higher price is warranted because of the amount of additives they use.
Using the lower octane is like running lean, the flame front propagates faster increasing power, but there is a tradeoff- more detonation in the high compression engines we're talking about.
Keep your gas fresh and buy premium brands.
