| Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? I used to ride a 2003 Harley Sportster 883 a couple years back before I switched to the Honda 929. I live in Staten Island, right next to the Verranzano bridge (its big) that connects us to brooklyn. It was sometime in November and i went with my g/f to Brooklyn to pick some stuff up. On the way back I noticed that I was short on gas, so I turned the Petcock and proceeded to go back over the bridge home to Staten Island; sure that I had enough gas. Turns out it wasnt that way, about a 1/4 of the way through the bridge I get a sputter, and my bike stops. Im stuck on a NYC bridge with drivers going about 60 mph right next to me, about 250ft in the air. Needless to say, my g/f isnt happy. A MTA tow truck comes up behind me (luckily they patrol pretty often for dumbasses like me) but they cant do anything for me, they dont have the hardware to tow bikes. While im talking to the tow truck guy, a guy on a Harley comes up and pulls up next to us, and asks me if I'm ok, I say yeah, just ran out of gas. He nods his head and then drives off, I think to myself, that was cool of him. About 20 minutes later the guy comes back with a gallon of gas, (the nearest gas station is off the bridge on the Staten Island side, so he had to go to Staten Island pay a toll, go to a gas station, drive back over the bridge to the brooklyn side, and come back to where we were) he stopped beside us again, handed me the gallon, and said never leave a fellow rider stranded, it might be you one day, then he drove off. I didnt get his name, his number or anything. I dont even know where he's from. All I can say is that was a huge eye openeing experience for me, as to the comraderie that some riders have with each other. Thats the reason I want to get into a motorcycle club, I was wondering if any of you all are in one, and if you are, what you had to do to get in? What is it like? the benefits? Negatives? |

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? Nope, no MC club for me. I ride my own ride. I couldn't care less what others do. If fact, riding with others irritates me. I can ride with one, maybe two others. But that's pushing it. I hate always looking over my shoulder to check on others in the ride. I love the solitude of a great mountain ride or the open road of our great expansive plains with no traffic to speek of.
That being said;
I'd never leave a bike on the side of the road stranded. We need to stick together in emergencies.

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? hi there im involved with a m/c club and all the members are involved in the social scene however our main objective is to bring motorsport to the average rider.every year we orginise 3 speed events(drag race, hill climb, and a road race) our club is ran by our members with every one getting there say.we also run about 12 rideouts every year for charity with a turnout of about 200 people every one.so join a club yes but be careful backpatch clubs are a different matter and wouldnt suit me too much testrone. |

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? well its not for everyone and each club is different, I belong to Mayhem street riders SW chapter and its got its benefits as well as its faults. we look out for each other, help out whenever someone is in need and have events year round such as toy rides in christmas time, poker runs for different charities, drag races for families of fallen riders, we are part of the Southwest coalition of clubs which is an organization of mostly harley bike clubs that have these types of events also in which we participate among other things. we know who we ride with and their riding habits so it makes it at least a little safer. now the bads, we get a lot of heat from the cops because of it, everytime someone gets pulled over wether in the club or not they get asked if they are part of it, and you get the occassional squid that would like to be part of it to say yes and give the rest a bad name, then you get the unnecessary drama with other clubs. also there is the clubs that see their members as quantity not quality so they let every squid out there into the club, and you are constantly watching out for the guy next to you. If you are considering joining a club I suggest you research it and maybe go on one of their rides before you make your decision, otherwise it might not be a pleasant experience. |

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? I agree with raider. I am a member of Notorious21 Riders out of Long Island...not too far from you. One of the reasons I am in this club is because we are like a brotherhood and sisterhood. Everyone looking out for each other. I caught a flat once and I made one phone call to someone and I got about 15 different calls from people in my club and people outside of it (my club members often contact other local clubs to help a stranded rider if we are riding in a place they frequent). From that one call I had a brand new tire waiting for me at the shop, a member of a different club brought me a plug kit to get to the shop, and I had an escort there by a few riders. Those are examples of having a good network which is one of the benefits of being in a club (although you dont have to be in a club to have that). If you do join a club make sure you do your research to make sure that the club represents what you do. Some people want to ride...some want to show off...some want to just hang out...some people focus mostly on the track...etc. PM if you are interested in knowing more about the different clubs in the NYC area. |

same here. after riding for a year or 2 by myself after my friends all got rid of their bike or basically just stopped riding for one reason or another I find it weird to ride with other people.
last summer right by the exit near my house there was a guy stranded on his bike. I stopped to ask if I could help. found out the bolt holding the positive battery cable on the battery had come loose and fell off at some point. I went to my house (about .5 mile away) and grabbed a few small bolts, none of them fit the nut. so I went back to my house to grab some small nuts/bolt. couldn't get any of the nuts into the little post. at that point the state trooper comes by and says we are causing traffic to back up. I was like wtf, the guy breaks down and we're in the breakdown lane, too bad for the idiots in cars who feel the need to rubberneck. never did get his bike going but I hooked him up with a repair shop who is located right next to a towing company so they sent someone out to come get him. and the prick trooper made me leave.

I'm sure there are some good clubs out there, but I know of a couple here in CA. that will smile in your face, become friendly, make you feel welcome, find out where you live then jack your bike. Just use your best instincts when it comes to judging characters. |

I hate riding in big groups. There's always someone who wants to pass you thru a blind curve or wants to do burnouts at every stop sign and wheelies down all the straights.
No thanks.
(That being said: I had a great time with a good group of riders in Deal's Gap - no one being a fuktard and we all rode at our own pace and met up at the end.) |

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? Nope, the stupid shyt that people want u to do just to become a member. It doesnt make sense to me. I meet people at the track and we just love the sport. that is the only thing that pretty much makes us a club. most of the times there are really stupid rules too. "U cant ride in front cause ur new" or ive even heard "hondas have to ride in the back". this was some club out of Odessa Tx, they meet up on thursdays at a starbucks. Those folks are idiots in most cases. |

| Re: Are you in a motorcycle club? Why? Why Not? Nope. None for me.
We have several here in the bay area and have been on a few open rides they have hosted. Cool people, but I just don't have the time and dedication that it takes and is expected of motorcycle clubs. They all love riding and take the sport seriously, thats fairly obvious. Even on open rides, they never leave anyone behind and were always helping if there were any riders that went down. These are the ones I am aware of and of whom I know a few members.

Its not for everyone...but what I always suggest find out about a MC before you join them...in our club we dont do that stupid stuff when riding together...its just stupid and dangerous...we emphasize safety...not all clubs do. You just have to pick and choose which club works for you. |

I have heard of clubs that do that...the only thing my club asks is...that you hang out with us. We consider each other a family and are very selective on who we let join...we dont want to have you join our club and then see you on the 10 o'clock news as Americas Most Wanted. We dont do that hazing stuff...of course some clubs do. |

Like the others have mentioned it is like a big family. We have cookouts, charity runs, family nights, and other fun events that do not only involve riding. You also get to meet many people who ride and gain different ideas from those riders. An M/C also allows others to recognize who you are with and give you a different show of respect |

Yeah right, if anything it just makes you a bigger target, half the because a big group of bikes is just takin up the road. |
