| Re: SECURITY????? I have found letting your neighbors see you walking to and from your car with rifles and high power scopes goes a long way to keeping people away from your stuff. No I'm not kidding either saddly. But on a more rational note find something to chain it to. Buy a no BS chain or cobra links ( a big cable is even harder to cut) and chain it to something. Put a good alarm on it with a siren AND a pager so if they do attempt to cut it loose it will make noise and let you know something is up even if you cannot hear it. LIke Ianbrown said if someone is determind they will get it. Idea is to make it look like too much of a pain in the ass to steal. They also make anti carjacking alarms for cars (I would think you could make it work on a bike easily) that if the car/bike is stolen it will shut the thing down after like 30 seconds and it is unable to be restarted. Chances are is someone stole your bike and it shut down a couple blocks away they would just leave it. |

LoJack is probably the only alarm system worth getting. I would seriously consider trying to find a good storage facility. Florida has to be one of the worst places for bike theft. |

I pull it right up to the front not far from the door at Sears, and make my business very brief inside |

| Re: SECURITY????? Good Luck. My 929 that I bought in 2001 and owned for 1 month was stolen and never found either. The cops didnt show up for about 4 hours after it was stolen, and took about 2 minutes and looked at me like I was the criminal.
Park in a garage if you are having the bike overnight. If you MUST park overnight outside have a ratty bike cover that covers it well. For some reason thieves think if the cover is ratty the bike must be too. My buddy uses a ratty old BMW one from the 80s. His was never stolen.
I have been trying to think of interesting electronic, or psychological ways of preventing motorcycle thefts so if you guys got 'em, share 'em.
Oh yea back in 2002 there was some guys that laid traps of bikes being out and watching from a Van a little ways away. They caught the guys and beat the crap out of them... I would LOVE to beat the crap out of a motorcycle or car thief. Nothing lower than thieves. They should have them hung by the neck like they used to do for Horse Thieves
But be glad you arent in SF. I Hate It Here: SF meter maids ticket stolen car 29 times |

| Re: SECURITY????? You really can't consider LoJack an alarm really. They have to be notified that the vehicle has been stolen and they activate the signal so the police can find it.
I guess my only real comment on this is that if you can't afford the insurance then you don't need to be buying that bike. I am more worried about how you are going to deal with taking care of your responsibilities should you cause an accident and injure someone, damage their vehicle, and get hurt yourself....

I'll never own a bike again without full insurance, after getting a bike ganked myself and watching countless friends bikes get ganked the peace of mind that the insurance brings is priceless. If my bike were to get stolen now, I just wish that the damn theif would crash and be critically injured, if my bike is totalled I get a new one
Won't lojack call you or something if your bike moves without your permission? |

| Re: SECURITY????? I've been watching too much of "The Unit" (DVD's of Season I and II) but it would be interesting to booby trap the bike. A pepper gas canister under the seat with some type of 'detonator' would be interesting. It could escalate from there.

| Re: SECURITY????? I agree with Getsome, you shouldn't of bought the bike if you can't insure it, and you sure as hell shouldn't be riding it without insurance. It's illegal, and if you ending hurting someone in an accident your problems will be much bigger than worrying about a stolen bike. |

From what I hear, $750 for the install and $150 when its activated. YOU have to call to get it turned on each time its stolen. And that's if your city's police has Lojack. Kansas City does not. If the thieves haul their van out of town to some corn field quicker than police can get mobilized, its gone. Gone for good. |

| Re: SECURITY????? In all reality the locked storage unit is probably your best bang for the buck. I pay $50 a month to have a garage here at my apartment complex, there is nothing but my bike and tools in there. That plus full coverage insurance and I don't worry too much. However, I live in probably one of the lowest theft areas in the nation so that is easy for me to say. Two guys in my complex leave their bikes out in the apartment parking lot every night of the summer. I would think that in your area an alarm would be well worth the money. The full feature scorpio with paging, hijack disable, and proximity sensor is the one that I have never heard anything bad about. I think that they even have a direct connector for most bikes that makes it a lot easier to install.

And don't be crying if it does get stolen and you are out 12k because you didn't have insurance.
If you can't afford the things that need to go along with having the bike then you can't afford the bike. People like this are why all of the rest of us keep seeing insurance rates go up because of all the uninsured motorist claims..
