I got an exhaust question! I was wondering what would happen if I ran my bike without my muffler(can)? I know that it would be louder for sure but would it hinder performance? I was thinking a possible problem would be compression maybe. I dont know and this was just a thought.

Re: I got an exhaust question! It might....cuz its usually good to have a little bit of back pressure, but maybe if you have a PC you can adjust the air/fuel ratio to compensate for that...??

Re: I got an exhaust question! It would create some back pressure, but not as much as it would without the can. idk...it might be worth just takin it off and tryin it out, its not that hard to do. just remember its gonna be really loud.

Re: I got an exhaust question! It'll run like crap and it'll be way too loud. We already have straight-pipe Harleys pissing off the general public. No need to add fuel to that fire.

Oh, and it's gonna be so damn loud that they'll have the ticket written for you before they even see you. |

Re: I got an exhaust question! yeah, i have to agree with whats being said. you'll mess up the back pressure and probably do loads of untold damage to the engine, choice of can will give you a better sound and loads of kudos points, an Akrapovic can sounds awesome just remove the baffle from your end can and re-balance your carb's...

One week to go and we are heading off to PI for the Supers. |

Re: I got an exhaust question! It's a bullshit myth that it will cause engine damage. The bike does not "need" a significant amount of backpressure. It will change the power characteristics, but it will not arbitrarily run like crap. It will however sound like crap and make you look like a squid.

Re: I got an exhaust question! i've pulled mine off several times "just to see" and it does not allow enough back pressure on the 954 to run at normal idle speed, the engine stalls. if you're revving it or you have your idle adjusted up it will run. and it is damn loud.. window rocking loud..

Re: I got an exhaust question! We did this on my buddy's beater bike, a YZF600, except we took it off from the block, so NO exhaust whatsoever. Yes we obvioulsy did this just to see what would happen, and of course to be jerks. It was loud as hell, and the exhaust gasses kept getting blown up towards him. The think ran, more or less, but you had to be on the throttle pretty hard. After 2 passes around the block and a couple of pathetic attempts to wheelie he switched to his Laverda 750 for the rest of our ride....me cruising along on my 900RR. :-)

Re: I got an exhaust question! That is what I had in mind. What would happen if I cut my can right above the bracket and re-rivet the end back on? Kinda like a do it yourself shorty pipe. Is there significant technology inside of the can? I just cant seem to find shorty mufflers anywhere on the net.

Re: I got an exhaust question! It's probably going to leak, unless you REALLY work to get it flush. inside the can you have baffling/packing but each can is a lil different with what's inside. I've read (im not sure if its this forum or not) that some guys cut their cans, but then they have a shop weld it back together. Supposedly it gets pretty loud and there's no problems running. I wouldn't do it, but thats just me.

Re: I got an exhaust question! Id say that cutting it and making your own shorty can is definitely the best way to go. It shouldnt be to complicated in there...most cans are just a sheet metal skin, with fiberglass packing or something like that inside. I too am going to be doing this to my bike very soon. It might help to have a PC to fine tune it a little bit afterwards, but id say this is much better than no can at all.

Re: I got an exhaust question! No no...srry. re-riveting works just fine....i dont think it would even look too good if it was welded. all you have to do is cut, re-rivet, and your good to go!

| Re: I got an exhaust question! Well look at it from this point of view, if you took the exhaust off a car, yeah it would run like crap but it would still run and there wont be any engine damage for sure.
When swapping the cans over on my 954, i struck her up outside and it was that loud people were comming out of their houses (and of course their car alarms were going off)
I had a thought of making a dummy can, i need like a crashed can, then remove all the insides, straighten it up, and weld a straight through pipe from the cone to the end. Then of course you would have to put it on a dyno to get it anywhere near 100%...

Re: I got an exhaust question! If you are just talking about a shorty can that is VERY easy. The difficulty varies by brand, but I have never seen one I could not do. Here is my 954 with a brand new out of the box Akrapovic cut 6-1/2" shorter just last week.
