Frame VIN ?

I am lookin at this frame on ebay for another project bike. Normally i am only lookin at a frame that can be verified to be legit (with a vin). This particular frame (eBay Motors: CBR929 CBR 929 - 900 - 954 FRAME (item 320233769979 end time Apr-05-08 17:36:12 PDT)) has no vin and guy said that it came from the police dept. Isnt there an alternative way for me to recover the VIN on this bike?

Re: Frame VIN ?

I thought that the VIN was stamped into the frame on the steering head. Ask to see a picture of the steering head to see if the VIN was ground off.

No, he's sent pics, there is no VIN on the neck nor is there the sticker. I was told that i could request some type of acid treatment that will reveal the VIN of the bike, but my HP didnt know anything about that.

Re: Frame VIN ?

See the rectangular pad on the left hand edge of tha attched pic. It should also be engraved along the edge of the chassis. That frame looks like its had a lot of welding in the headstock area.

Re: Frame VIN ?

It was a replacement frame. They are sold to the dealer without a VIN and the dealer should stamp the VIN in. This obviously was not done; thus no VIN.

Nope, not a replacement frame. Recovered frame is what he says. When i seen my RC after it was recovered, it still had the VIN on it. The police didnt remove it. From what i get from the seller it was professionally removed with a chemical or either identified with the chemical. He says "Hello, the vin was professionally removed per say, the line marks can be buffed out but they are there from the chemical that either removed them or to retrieve them from officials. (my guess) to answer your question I do not believe so, unless you are a professional???" I want to build another bike for the street. Maybe even sell it. So from what i know, i need a VIN. Is the general public able to just apply for a VIN? I guess like the custom chopper guys, they get a vin somehow dont they?

Re: Frame VIN ?

The only reason for a vin number to be taken off is that the frame/bike would have been stripped down and sold for spares. It might have been involved in a crash and been put in a category for breaking only.

The frame would then only be able to be used for track use etc but strictly not street.

Re: Frame VIN ?

Not over her twin, in the States the different states all have different manners in which they handle total loss vehicles but it usually always consists of some sort of title paperwork being generated for the specifiic frame VIN. The usual reason for a bike to have a ground off title in the states is because it's stolen.

As a home builder in Oklahoma you can generate your own letter of origination and issue your own unique identifiers to a frame but I don't know anything more specific than that. The vehicle does have to be inspected by the highway patrol and theres a butt load of paperwork involved I don't know if a OEM un vin'd frame would get passed since thats usually a sign of theft.

Re: Frame VIN ?

That is not so common over here but does still happen. Some bikes/cars are stolen and while some are used in crimes, some are dumped/used for joy riding, some are actually stripped, shipped before the owner realises or has their identity "modified" so that the thieves can put a set license plates on and use it and never get traced to the original owners.

To re-register a car/bike/kit car which you have "built from scratch", you will have to go through a bit of paperwork and then you will be issued a Q-Registration Plate which cannot be removed or taken off. This then shows the officials etc that the car/bike has been made from different cars/bikes.
