There are ooodles of threads discussing break in procedures. This i s a very controversial subject if you'll do a search you can probably find plenty of threads. Personally 30 miles change the oil and filter and break it in on a Dyno.

Re: running in?

Don't lug the engine, and don't let it get too hot. Heat cycles are good, then let the thing cool completely down. Also, vary RPM constantly during break-in. That doesn't mean you can't hold a steady RPM, just don't do it for prolonged periods. At 100 miles start at like 5k, and after 100 miles take it up 1k rpm's each 100 miles you pass. No WFO, just gradual bursts to that RPM. At 600 miles change the oil, then start taking it up to redline here and there with bursts of throttle. After 100 miles of that, just ride it like you normally would and you are good to go.

Re: running in?

seems we have this same question about once a week. Being an amatuer engine builder myself, I subscribe to the MOTOMAN method. however, using the factory recomended method will not harm the engine, only rob you of a few free horses. The absolute most important thing to do is CHANGE THE OIL!!! Change it early and often. Since most of the break in on the cylinders in done almost instantly on start up, most of those small metal shavings will be in your oil until you change it. MOTOMAN says before 50 miles. I do it again at 100 miles. trust me the last thing you want riding around in your oil passages is metal shavings. For some reason, your bearings just don't like that.

read the link python provided. It is full of good info on break ins by a professional engine builder.

and another thing, make sure you let your engine warm up COMPLETELY before you even touch the throttle. During break in the expansion in the crank case is critical. If you try to rev the heck out of it while it is heating up it can and will seize the pistons in the cylinders.
