Wheels?

so i took my rear wheel of my bike and took it in to get a new tire put on. i go back to the shop about 2 hours later to pick it up and when i look at it i see that the shop scratched the hell out of the lip of the rim. so i bring it to the guys attention and he says that it was already there when i brought the rim in. so after i explained that it wasnt and that that was impossible seeing as how the bike still had the original tire on it he finally admitted that it could have been their machine that did it. He then proceeds to tell me that its NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL! this really sets me off. i explain that i dont pay thousands of dollars for a bike so the shop can mess it up. So he tells me to come back the next day (which was today) and he will have it all touched up and ready to go. I go in this morning to pick it up and look at it and it looked like they used a sharpie marker to touch up the scratches. so by this point im starting to get pretty heated and go talk to the service manager and he tells me that they used factory honda touch up paint for the wheels. After i get my point accross that i dont care what it was that they used because it came out like crap he finally told me that they will strip the whole rim and redo it and that i can pick it up tomarrow. My concern is that 1. it's unlikely that they could actually do a good job in one day considering that this is your standard shop and not a paint shop or anything. my second concern is that i believe the rims are powdercoated from the factory and not painted so even if the rim does end up looking fine it wont match the front and it wont be as durable.

have any of you had similar experiences and any advice would be greatley appreciated.

Re: Wheels?

You don't want to hear this, but whenever the bike is out of your hands, or you are not looking over the guy's shoulder, it is going to get scratched, dented, scraped, cracked or broken. It takes longer to do things with care and attention, so shops prefer to race through the job. You will never be totally satisfied by them.

To minimize future anguish, learn to change your own tires. And buy the correct spoons. You don't need an expensive machine to change a tire. You need time and energy and patience.

Or be like me and have a friend who has these attributes. I miss him now that I've moved here!

A lot of the bike shops up here have a little sign that says that they are not responsible for scratches that the machine does to the rims. That doesn't mean they try to scratch your rim, it is just a clause that they have and like to point to when the event occurs. I myself have never had this issue cause most of my bikes are used and already beat up. If the business says they will fix it though properly, that is pretty good. Hopefully they do it right for you.

Re: Wheels?

i picked the rim up this morning. they actually did a really good job of fixing it which surprised me. i know the owner well so he got on the guys in the back to do it correctly. on the note of changing my own tires i do my own dirt bike tires, but id rather spend the $20 and let them chang the sport bike tires. the side walls are so hard on them it's not even worth it.

Sorry, it sounded important to you when you were complaining.
