| Re: Whats hacked you off today? Lunatic drivers, off their faces on Mekong whiskey, chasing me in the car, overtaking me and trying to block the road for over 15 kilometres because they hadn't seen me and had to lock up to avoid hitting me. I even pulled into the police station and they hid outside and waited until I came out.
I've just come home from a ride all the way to Koh Samui and back to Phuket (nearly 1000 kilometres - road report going up soon) without grief but end up getting involved in this kind of thing just 15 k's from my house, days later.
In the end I pulled up outside my brother's bar having called him from the police station, so that if it really blew up there would be other Thais around who know me and know I'm not a trouble-maker. When the guy got out, he was no more than 5 foot 2' (reeking of whiskey) and didn't (as I feared) have a gun. However, if Thais see a farang in a fight with another Thai, they won't ask questions, they'll just pile in. So you don't need to be tasty when you know you have an army of mates no matter what happens. The situation was calmed down because I just why'd (hands in the prayer position) him a lot and said that the incident was my fault. Thai friends also apologised on my behalf. His temper calmed down a lot and very quickly, but the cheeky bastard still tried to imply that now his car had a problem and that I should pay. Needless to say, he went home empty-handed and shaking my hand to say that all was forgiven. |

That said, it normally takes quite a bit to get me to lose my rag, but this guy was driving like a right tool and then said that it was my fault we nearly had an accident.
Now I know how it is out here, so I reaaaaally reined myself in. But after apologising some 20 times, he was still ranting. So, I asked him why didn't you come into the station. He didn't reply, surprise, surprise. |

I have learnt to NEVER apologise unless it was undefendably my fault - yet I can relate to all that apologising you did even though that guy blimmin' deserved a proper repremand.
Glad he got away empty handed...

Put it this way. If I didn't stay calm and beat him up, he is a member of the mini-cab mafia here. They drive all over the island everyday. I would have had to kill him and not get seen doing it to have any hope of a long life thereafter. There are a couple of problems with that:
1. I have never and never wish to take anybody's life. That's something I couldn't live with unless there was literally no other solution.
2. There's always some bastard who sees this kind of thing, no matter what you do to prevent it.
3. The thought of having to look over my shoulder for years isn't very appealing.
So, as annoyed as I undoubtedly was having to apologise to some little f**king pr**k with the same level of intelligence as a brain-dead lab rat, I think the best outcome was achieved. |

Well, at least both you and Ayumi are okay, and your Thai friends also stood by your side. Goes to show they can see who was in the right.

I didn't involve the police because they are quite literally the last resort. Generally speaking, any incident involving a farang and Thai, regardless of how obvious the lay of blame, it will be the farang's fault. Moreover, as previously mentioned, given the mob mentality, all that would have happened is I report the incident and they will do nothing but scribble it down on a piece of paper. (In a far more ugly way BECAUSE I reported it to the police) when I am then bumped off because I was seen days later by one of this guy's mates, the police will say, "Well, he did report it but we just thought it was one of those silly road arguments."
Setanta, if there is any doubt as to what I'm saying, read this week's Phuket Gazette online. There is a story in there of a Thai guy (with his wife and kid) who was shot though the neck and killed. The police believe this was because the guy may of cut someone up while pulling out of a junction. His was not known to have any enemies.
And that is just one of many cases every day in the wild, wild wast. |

Was going to have a moan about man hole covers and which idiot decided to make them so they are as slippy as ice once wet - but after reading Surf's story I'm thanking my lucky stars. If all I have to moan about is not looking where I'm going then life must be pretty good!

What's hacked me off? Being hounded by the office on days off, including today, and having worked for 2 years covering 2 posts, with one of those years on reduced pay and reduced hours.
I am absolutely exhausted, and feel bled dry. How many bikeable days have I given up, just for my dedication to fufilling my responsibilities? How many other sacrifices have I made, that have costed me personal time and opportunities? There is nothing wrong with being loyal and dedicated, dilligence or tenacious or putting other sbefore oneself - but if the feelings are not mutual - I am well and truly shafted.
I am having a meeting on Tuesday when I am back in the office - lets see how many jobs I can apply for before then. These clowns are really killing me.

| Re: Whats hacked you off today? There I was walking out of work thinking I've got a week off work
I walked up to my bike, started her up, put on my crash helmet and gloves, got on and started to wheel her backwards to get out of the car park..
And she doesn't move
So I push a little harder and nothing She's not budging
I'm sat there thinking WTF!!!!!!!
So I get off to check her over..... and notice I've got a feckin flat back tyre
The end result.. I got a lift home from the boss and my poor bike is at the yard until I can get her on the pickup and to a garage to sort her out
Apparently the tyres got a feckin great screw in it
I hate Friday the 13th's |

| Re: Whats hacked you off today? Riding home from work today, beautiful day, a little wind, but gorgeous. I hop onto the interstate for about 10 miles to get home, and for a change, I just feel like riding in the slow lane, doing the speed limit. So there I am with a chit eating grin on my face because the day is over, the weekend is here, I'm riding my bike and the day is beautiful. There is exactly 1 bump on the interstate on my way home, and just when I come to it, the 40 year old pick up pulling a 75 year old trailer hauling mulch, manure, tools and a wheelbarrow decides that he needs to be in my lane more than I do. He comes over inches in front of me, and hits the bump. Guess what happened next...
Out flies the mulch, all over me (we're doing the speed limit of 65 mph). Ok, I'm slowing down, still not too bad, but that heinous trailer of his doesn't have any suspension, so next off comes the wheelbarrow. That sucker is flying at me like an angered and impregnated elephant, and now there is traffic in the lanes beside me. I manage to avoid the wheelbarrow, and the rake that comes off, but then the worst part happens. The chit starts flying (literally). I got home, covered in the things that cows decided aren't good enough to keep in their colons, the bike is a mess. My loving wife (who always has my back) opens the garage door when she hears the bike coming up the drive, and is waiting for me when I get off of the bike. Being the wonderful person that she is, she locks me out of the house, and screams through the door that I must strip down to nothing, hose off in the back yard before I'm allowed to come into "my clean house".
That will teach me, I'll never ride in the slow lane again. |

*even though being hit by a wheelbarrow (or rake) coulda been nasty, that still made me chuckle
