CBR 954 RR3 chugging and conking out

Hi Folks,

Just got my bike (RR3) together after a crash. Many thanks for the help from this site.

Unfortunately having it back on the road has brought few more problems:

I was touring around Ireland for the last few days and yesterday (stupidly) I ran out of fuel. Within 15 mins I had it filled up again and on the road. Straight away it started chugging and near cutting out. I though maybe a small bit of dirt or condensation got into the injectors so I just kept on going giving it a good run. However a 100km later when I reached my B&B / Hotel and just as bad - even worse.

Then this morning it seemed it was actually an electrical fault. When I turned on the ignition the lights barely came on and when I hit the starter button nothing happened (absolutely nothing - not a whisper) for about 5 mins. Then for some reason it kicked into life. It's also worth pointing out that when the injectors are priming it doesn't sound right almost half assed.

I decided to head home and the whole way (about 200km) the bike kept cutting out and then back in again - quiet dangerous in fact. The display kept flicking on and off and sometimes the speed would read 130km then 0km and again to 130km. For the last maybe 30km the bike kept cutting out and I'd have to pull into the side of the road and wait a few minutes before it would start again. And a few times while stopped at the lights she would cut out again and wouldn't start for a minutw or two. Eerytime she cut out the display would disappear.

So I can guess it's a fuel problem but is it simply dirt in the injectors or in the pump or is it something more serious like the engine managment computer. The fact the electrics are playing up suggests the latter.

Anyway if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it. Any idea as to what to chck would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mark

I had the same problem today on a trip back from the Isle of Man. Intermittent and worse when in traffic on partial throttle. Full throttle worked fine on most occassions.

magicmark, did you find the cause of your issue?

Matt

Hi Matt,

Did you run out of fuel? Or even run while extremely low on fuel?

I'll be honest I'm not a 100% sure how it fixed itself - I managed to get it back home and immediately stripped the bike down to the injectors. I didn't actually inspect the injectors as I had no new O rings but my plan was to prime them over and over and see if I could hear anything obviously wrong with them - however this in itself seemed to rectify it in some way as the bike ran perfectly after that.

What I did do though on the way home (about 20 miles from home) was let the fuel run right down, filled it up again with new petrol and added STP fuel injector cleaner - I can only presume this helped.

So basically I would recomend bring your fuel right down, fill it up again with both fuel and injector cleaner, prime the injectors about 30 times if not more and then go for a spin.

Also when the bike is running you may note a flashing red light which will indicate what exactly is the problem - you will need to refer to the manual to confirm what exactly the code (number of flashes) mean - let me know if you don't have it - if not I can scan it for you.

Sorry went on a bit oof a tangent there but hopefully this will help.
