| Crash nobs (oggy nobs) So the other day at work i was a little bored, i had my bike with me and though what could i do with some spare time...
I came up with making some Crash nobs (oggy nobs) and was just wondering what others thought of them. As i'm not sure what size they are or how long they normaly are. I looked at some pictures on the net and this is what i came up with...
Any thoughts you guys might have on improvements would be good. |

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) def. make them long enough so that when the bike is laid over, the stator cover does not touch the ground..... my bike got laid over, busted the stator cover, and pulled a piece of the block off with it.... if my sliders were a little long it wouldn't have happened.
just something to think about. |

Any thoughts you guys might have on improvements would be good. | Mate, i can't get a good look at them from the pictures. You'd better send me a set so i can inspect them closer. They look the goods though. Did you machine them to fit snugly into the frame so that they dont have room to move on impact? As for making them longer, it's a bit of a no-no as I had some and they had to much leverage on the bolt and bent it in the motor. As I undid the bent bolt it draged out some thread and gouged out the frame a bit. Not happy Jan. At least the new ones covered the damage.

Just a little pissed i couldn't find any black nylon at work.
I hope they are not to long, dont want to gouge out the frame if i put her down
As for getting a set will have to get back to you if i can find some more nylon... |

just something to think about. | I wouldn't recommend this.
The stator cover runs very close to the road when you're cranked over. If you made the knobs longer than that they'd be liable to hit the road or curbs when you're cornering.
If you want to protect the stator cover either fit knobs at the bottom of the engine/frame, solid pegs or a stator cover protector/slider.
Solid pegs are the best in my own experience.
I made my knobs 80mm long and they appear to be similar length to yours.
In a more than 100mph crash the knob barely ground down. The aluminium peg wore away much more than the knob.

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) When I wrecked I had pretty short sliders, must have been 50-60mm and It still bent the crap out of the bolt. No damage to the engine threads, but that bold had about a 20 degree bend it it. Guess it all depends on how the bike goes down, also a reason to use lower tensile strength bolts, bend the bolt instead of the motor mounts/threads. |

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) Yep. Every crash is unique :-)
Knobs are no guarantee but they are very cheap insurance.
If the bike starts flipping or hits anything hard the knobs aren't going to do much :-)
I used high-tensile bolts on my knobs but the 929 has huge top mounts. If you hit something hard enough to actually break those mounts off the frame I think the bolt is the least of your problems :-)

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) Yeah the mount is pretty beefy on the 929/54 I was talking more of goobering up the threads, just didn't come out that way. If the bolt will bend instead of staying really stiff then the bending of the bolt will take some of the energy out of the crash rather than tearing the threads out of your case. |

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) The top engine mounts don't go into the cases.
They go into a solid part of the cylinder head.
I'd be very surprised if a crash could damage the threads.

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) my friend talked to a mechanic at a big cycle shop a few days ago, and they dont recommend sliders at all.
reasons they gave are:a) any crash of any speed, its liable the frame can get bent and thats way more costly than the fairings (as in like, the bike...) B)if they stick out to far you will hit on corners (this was said).
That being said, if your washing your baby and you knock her over (its been done) the sliders help.
I dont know, cause i dont have any, and i dont think they wanted to do the work of installing them on his bike, but it made me think.
and i like the white, it accents the paint imo |

| Re: Crash nobs (oggy nobs) I agree that there are _some_ bikes that I would hesitate to fit crash knobs to but in general, if the bike is merely sliding on bitumen the knobs shouldn't transfer enough energy into the engine mounts to damage them.
In a highside the bike can come down directly on a knob which would put several hundred kilograms of energy into it. Without the knob though that energy is going into the side of the fairing, frame and engine so stuff is likely to get broken anyway.
