Any clue, guys?

Hey,
Looking at buying a bike, not current on it's registration. Owner says he'll deduct the cost of getting it current from the price (has to move, motivated to sell, etc). I put the VIN in the CA DMV website, it can't calculate the fees, says "Current application in progress."

Any idea if that means it's for sure not legit? I don't wanna waste my time... anybody from Cali know about this kinda thing??

Thanks!

-Lizzy

I would take the vin down to the DMV and have them run it in person...you definitely want to make sure its a legit vin and the bike isn't stolen

Yeah, many states have adopted this (if not all)

James is right... in CA, it's 80% of the original fee per year. I think they cut it off after 2yrs, though. It's insane... one bike I looked at had over $400 to get it current registration.

It's a wonder how CA can charge fees like that and still be in a budget crisis!

Hopefully Maine NEVER does that. Hey, what's the weather like for riding out there?

I'm looking at an 05 F4i.

Oh, maybe I should explain. I have an 05 F4i, my brother and I split the cost, figured within 6 months one of us would wanna get a diff bike, sadly he laid it down (but, he's okay! ), so he's buying me out and I just so happen to still want an F4i. Thus this thread.

Re: Any clue, guys?

I'm just thankful he's okay. But yeah, it's neat we'll both have bikes, hopefully.

Oh, went to the DMV today - they won't give specific info since I'm not the owner... would say that the registration expired in Nov '08 (owner disclosed that, so that's truthful). Reregistration costs estimated to run somewhere low $200ish. So says the CA DMV. Lucky it's not been expired longer, then it'd be even more $$$.

I'll keep you all updated...I'm set to see the bike this Friday, 9/4.

Re: Any clue, guys?

Sorry to hear about the bike getting laid down. Glad he is okay. How much damage?

This summer has not been great. Most of June and July rained. August was pretty good. The mornings are pretty cold now but nice during the day and afternoon. Tuesday morning was like 42F.....brrrr. How about over there in CA?

Re: Any clue, guys?

Plenty of cosmetic damage, a few issues here and there, but the only necessary mechanical repair is the radiator and fan... which are on their way to me as we speak, in a Fed Ex truck. (Gotta love eBay!)

That weather sounds awful. :/ I hate rain. Well, here it's been hot. Highs between 95-105. It's 7pm and 85 degrees where I live. It's just a heatwave right now, won't stay this hot all the time. Better than rain, I say!

Now... to the important news... I looked at the F4i today. Tomorrow morning I'll fork over the cash and take it home! Yay!

Re: Any clue, guys?

As promised, here are a few pictures... took the first 2 in the dark the night I'd bought it, sorry they're not much. The second pic is of the sticker the previous owner had on it... I thought it was funny because the first F4i my brother and I bought had a purple butterfly decal, and this one has a flaming skull. So, he removed a purple butterfly from his, and I'll probably remove a flaming skull from mine.

3rd picture: Ortega highway taught me a lesson. I laid it down [lowside]... bummer. But, gotta make the best of it - I'm alive! I had gear on, and didn't let go 'til the bike&I quit sliding, so the bike took most of the scratches for me. Other than one gash and a small patch of road rash, I was just sore for a couple weeks. Not bad, all things considered.

After I replace the stator cover, shift lever and signal [yes, I'll do before and afters], you'll get a nice smattering of photos of the fairings post-lowside. [No, I'm not replacing the fairings right away. It's completely ridable.]

Hope everyone else is staying rubber side down! ATGATT!

don't you hate when the stator cracks? UGH..i went to replace my stator after a low side, and when i took the cracked one off. Some of the engine case was attached to the cover with JBWeld..thank you previous owner

I hate when people put retarded stickers on their bikes (i.e the flaming skull) this dude in my old neighborhood has "Sit down, spread em wide,it's not a sportster its a super glide"

on the windscreen of his SRAD....wtf

By the way that was 4 months ago,and i'm finally able to get the motor welded so hopefully it works out

Yeah, I sure was bummed about my stator, but glad it wasn't something worse, ya know? Man, I always hear great things about JBWeld, sad to hear something bad about it! But that stinks about your engine case... let me know how it works out when you get it all fixed!

Junkie, you're right. I don't have leathers yet. I did have on my helmet, boots, gloves, & jacket. The ATGATT was just a friendly reminder to everyone since my lowside was a reminder of the importance of gear. I have to pay for my Spring semester tuition, then finish off my ATG. Good call on your part about ATG though.

Glad you're ok, relatively! You mentioned holding onto your bike whilst sliding...not a good idea. When you fall, let the bike go, you don't want to be anywhere near it if it starts to flip. Just an FYI.

Ahh, we both have taken the MSF course, actually. I took it earlier this year... just attempted Ortega Hwy before my skills should allow. I figured on taking it slowly, but Ortega decided to remind me I need more practice on simpler places first. Lesson learned. Good call on the class, though.

As for my brother, he's a pretty good rider, he's been riding 2 or 3 years, and a pickup clipped him on the fwy ( ), so his wasn't particularly his fault. But he's ok and we got to work on our bikes together.

Good point! I will keep that in mind, though I hope to never have to bring it to the forefront of my mind!

Quick update: I swapped out my stator cover, and got the shift lever and signals in the mail... soon to be installed and photos posted.
