Time fore a change.

I am thinking about puting for orders and would like to take my family to experiance a different country.
the wife and I havetalked about the UK and Germany and I know it is US but Alaska. I spent 3 years in Alaska and loved every minute of it.
So you UK peeps convince me that is where we need to go.
Oh and the main reason Germany is in there is of course AUTOBAHN.
I have 7 years left to retirement and would realy like to get the hell out of here for a while.

Re: Time fore a change.

Have you been to the UK before?

Theres a big difference between the country side and the cities, I'm hopefully getting out of London in the next five years.

Ever thought about Canada/Aussie land?

Re: Time fore a change.

What are you looking to do when you retire? The place you wish to go, what special things are you looking for it to have?

The UK in general sure doesn't have the best weather!

Go UK rather than Germany!! You and your family will enjoy it more, purely on the basis that you said your wife might struggle with the language barrier in Germany
Yes we have very seasonal weather but ...but in between the rain there are some fantastic roads to let rip on !!!!

I grew up in Utah Joind the AF moved to South Dakota, a few years later on to alaska nad then 6 years ago back to Utah. I am sure the inclimate weather is nothing to far from what I am used to. Maybe a little more rain.

I will tell you South Dakota winters are about twice as bad as the Alaska winters. Besides the 20 hours of dusk (not dark) durring the summer made up for anything the winter thew at us.

Yes, there is a language barrier..but if you go up in the mountains to a small little village you wont regret it. I went there like 7 years ago and it was the best trip I've ever been on

There are so many places to see, what you should really do is write down a list of things you and your family really want to see, and make a choice from there. I go to europe once a year for vacation and try to go to a different country each time based on whatever it is I want to see before I die.

Re: Time fore a change.

Personally I would not recommend the UK, if possible I intend to leave in a couple of years. We seem to have so many problems over here that are getting worse and there's no sign of anything getting better.

If you really must do it, stay away from the larger towns and cities (there are a few nicer ones but generally they are pretty dire) and avoid the south-east, you could probably add the major cities in the midlands and north as well.

There are some really nice areas, Devon and Cornwall, lake district and yorkshire moors spring to mind, the Welsh countryside and mountains, and the Scottish mountains all have some stunning areas - but there's far more crap than good in my humble opinion.

Ah I see - if it's temporary then it's not so bad, there's quite a lot to see over here I suppose and it's easy enough to travel around Europe. It'll also make the OP appreciate home a lot more when they return!

Plan A is to move to Oz, we've not got ourselves in to gear yet but we aim to start this month - it'll take about 2 years to get away though. Plan B would be to stay in the UK but move to a village in the North East (good biking roads!). Plan C would be to learn either German or Spanish and have a bash at living there.

It's only my personal opinion that the UK is on it's knees, I'm sure there are many people who are happy here, but for me there are far too many negatives - I know of course every country has their problems, but in my opinion we seem to have more than most. Crap weather too!

Re: Time fore a change.

Germany - Good links for the Air Force jobs. Nurburgring. Autobahn. Sausages. Litre glasses of beer. Easy access to Croatia and the Baltic's which are stunning.

Italy - particularly around Milan. Fab food. Incredible scenery. Stunning roads. moderate climate. Venice down the road. Switzerland just over the border.

Northern Spain - the Pyrenees. My favourite wines (ride through the Pyrenees into northern Portugal for the best Rioja's - one of my best ever trips) Lovely weather. Go for the northern med coast around Cadaquez - just lovely. Valencia circuit nearby - the Spanish are motorcycle mad.

UK - Go South West - Devon, Cornwall, Dorset - nice beaches, The New Forest, Twee villages and cream teas. OR Far north aka Scotland which has some of the best scenery and roads anywhere (I think so anyway). Visit London for museums and galleries. Visit Birmingham for Curry. Live somewhere else!

Well we're gonna give it a go - getting an Aussie visa, that is - they don't make it easy which is a good thing - unlike here where we'll take any useless waster and give them a house and a lifetime of free money, paid for by yours truly.....

I heard Ireland has its bad areas as well - someone told me today that Limerick is the murder capital of Europe, which surprised me.

Leeds is nothing... Come down to the East End of London and you'll want to go back.

Sorry, I knew that - I meant Ireland has it's bad areas as well - it just surprised me to hear Limerick was like that, I've never been there but didn't imagine it like that.

I was in East London on my Blade one the evening, on my own in the dark - I felt pretty vulnerable and couldn't wait to get out of there. It's not often that Stevenage looks welcoming, but this was one of those rare occasions.

That is one good thing about UTAH I have my .45 GAP in my tank bag at all times. They just recently passed a law that your vehicle is an extension of your home so you can have a loaded hand gun with you, without having a concield carry permit. I have mine but it is nice that as long as you can leaguly cary one (I.E NO FELLONIES OR DOMESTIC CHARGES) you can have a weapon to defend yourself.

Hmm, I'm not sure what I think about being allowed to carry guns - on the one hand, it puts everyone on a level playing field - on the other hand, it'd make guns even easier for the deadbeats to get hold of. There's a sub-culture over here that think nothing of stabsing people, if these lot got hold of (more) guns then I can't see that being a good thing somehow.
