Fuel Pump issue, Plz help

Hey guys, It seems that I have run into a problem with my 1985 Honda shadow 700. My fuel pump will click on my initial key turn as a prime, but wont kick back on. I have changed the fuel lines, fuel filter, battery, cleaned the jets, and still no luck. The only way I have got it started is by turning the key on and off about 15 times to get gas to the floats, but while the bike is running it seems to not be pumping. I'm pretty new with bikes so I'm learning as I go. I took the fuel pump off and hotwired it to the battery and it does the same think. Clicks once, and when i drop the power it retracts. Is this how a fuel pump is supposed to work. Does the fuel pump relay turn power on and off to the pump in order for it to work? Please help me out. I'm totally out ideas.

Sounds like you're talking about the relay rather than the pump.
The pump doesn't click.
Yes, that's what relays do. They just close the circuit to the pump.
The bike will run without the fuel pump at all as long as you keep the fuel level above the float bowls.

Re: Fuel Pump issue, Plz help

You need to perform a test on the pump itself while its hooked up to confirm voltage is going to it while in circuit on the bike.
If its anything like the points driven type of pump the early CBRs have, its possible the internal points are worn out. It will work erratically or not at all in this condition.
If you hook it up directly it should click constantly once its functioning correctly, if it has a cover on one end kept on with a screw remove it and look at the points faces.
These points move a lever within the pump body that drives the diaphragm internally to move the fuel through the system, its a low volume, low pressure pump.
