XX Won't Hold a Charge

Actually been riding a bit lately, and the other day my buddy went to start his XX and there wasn't enough juice to crank her over. So I pushed him and it bump started no problem. We rode about 5 miles down the road and stopped for food. An hour later she started up no problem. Yesterday (less than 24 hours later) no juice... The battery is maybe 2 months old. Bought it at the same time I bought the 7S for my RC. What else could it be? Regulator/rectifier? Stator?

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

Sounds like a bad battery

You bump start it to get things going. It generates enough power to run AND start the bike later. Over night the battery discharges.

The only things I have seen cause this are a bad battery or short

Must obey the sheep dog

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

A loose cable can do that also. Check the plug between the stator and the Reg/rec also they melt and do strange stuff.

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

Also check the terminals for corrosion- this can cause a 'dead' battery very easily.

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

the rectifier is a know problem on the early ones, they upgraded in '99 I think it was and again 2 years later maybe?

Was the batter charged on the bench before going into service?

How many miles are on his bike? The regulator/rectifiers seem to go bad around 20,000...

Mine went out at 22k. It comes on fast; all of a sudden you discover your bike won't crank over. Then it's fine... no worries. Next day, starts up fine you ride somewhere and shut it off. No juice. If you get it started -- bump start or with a jump -- you'll eventually find that the electrial instruments (tach, gas gauge, temp) start flaking and eventually the bike will die because it's been running off the battery, not current from the stator.

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

Check the voltage at the battery while the engine is running. If it's over like 14.4 volts(I think) then it's the rectifier, and the bat is over charging. If it's less than 14.4, then it's the generator. If it's right around 14.4 or so, then you have a short circuit somewhere. A hot wire is getting grounded out somewhere on the bike. I've had a lot of problems with my f3... I assume a lot of properties apply

Re: XX Won't Hold a Charge

Check out this post from the XX forum...
Dead Battery? - Public Discussion Forums

Also, trouble shooting flowchart from ElectroSport is helpful.
https://www.electrosport.com/electro...t_finding.html

And the Service Manual has an excellent step by step guide with all the XX specific values for each check. Last time I had similar problems, all the components checked out except that the battery was marginal, but still passed it's tests. It wasn't untill I pulled it and put a meter on it (after a full charge) overnight did it indicate that the battery was toast. Gotta new DieHard in it now and all is well (knocks on wood).
