How many miles are on his bike? The regulator/rectifiers seem to go bad around 20,000...
Mine went out at 22k. It comes on fast; all of a sudden you discover your bike won't crank over. Then it's fine... no worries. Next day, starts up fine you ride somewhere and shut it off. No juice. If you get it started -- bump start or with a jump -- you'll eventually find that the electrial instruments (tach, gas gauge, temp) start flaking and eventually the bike will die because it's been running off the battery, not current from the stator.
