| CBR1100XX throttle bodies, cleaning/molybdenum two questions really quick, also thanks to denzee for all the help!
I had the air box off with 4000 miles, noticed black "eyebrows" in the throttle bodies at the level of the butterflies.
I cleaned these off with carb. cleaner (yes, the stuff in the can) and have had a funny feeling since then that they were some kind of special coating (although they looked like typical carbon blow-by).
Now I read about this molybdenum coating that shouldn't be removed:
1. Were the black smears in the throttle bodies really just combustion waste products ?
2. Now that my molybdenum coating is probably shot, do I have to worry about other problems ( I mean it runs fine, MPG, powerful, OK) ?
THANKS!

PS since the time of the cleaning, I've had trouble with the bike running really rich when cold, led also possible to the hydro-lock condition posted below... |

The coating is there to help lessen the build up of carbon by making it a very smooth surface. There will always be some though. Now it'll just mean it will be more prone to build up in the future. There is available a more gentle product for cleaning throttle bodies. Doesn't do you much good now I know.
I don't really see how that would have caused your new problem. Did you allow all the cleaner and carbon to go into the engine or just spray it on a rag, then wipe it out? |

| Re: CBR1100XX throttle bodies, cleaning/molybdenum OK, so I found a picture of the black stuff in the manual and also a post on this website via google: SPOOGE in my throttle bodies!
It appears that it is normal and that I shouldn't have removed it.
A new throttle body costs $1500, the next question is if there is some way to put it back ?
I don't think I cleaned all of it off, but a substantial amount.

I thought maybe by removing this "lacquer" as I'm finding it called on other websites, I may have upset the idle mixture, maybe that is why it runs rich.
It seems like folks are saying the coating is to keep the butterflies from sticking in the TB bores ???
I am more of a car guy, like you kind of figured out, and I've never seen this before.
I looked at the bike again this morning, started it, was gassy when cold but no hydro-lock, the regulator isn't visible though, until the fairing comes off. Will have to be later.
So I'm still searching what to do if I wipe the coating off, but the consensus is that it's factory. So if the hydro-lock problem gets fixed by the regulator, and the only other negative aspect is running rich cold, I will leave it be.
As far as the butterflies sticking in the TB, maybe there is an adjustment stop to keep them slightly open...
THANK YOU!

| Re: CBR1100XX throttle bodies, cleaning/molybdenum The coating isn't for the throttle plates. They have a throttle stop screw. Get your FPR replaced and go from there. The idle mixture is determined by the ECM not the butterflies. Don't sweat it chip. |

I DO sweat it , but sometimes too much. I've had this motorcycle since brand new (off the showroom floor), it still looks and runs this way (-the fuel reg., on the way from BikeBandit.com) and I'm just picky...
Thanks for sticking with me, I appreciate it. As you can see, bike is torn apart, will let y'all (you) know next week how she runs with the new fuel reg.. Today I changed the oil, checked the coolant level (bec. leak) and got ready for the new part...

PS wanted to add that, although there was no fuel tank on, I cranked it today and it STARTED...there was so much fuel still in the cylinders. Ran for 0.5 a second, but still was surprised, was just running the starter to pressurize oil after the change, old oil stank big time like fuel... |
