F2 gas tank issue!!

I have a 92 F2 that I recently bought and have encountered an issue with the fuel tank. While riding I ran out of gas despite the petcock lever being in the "on" position. I got gas to make it to the gas station and filled up the tank. I got home and put the bike in the garage, noticing the smell of fuel. I walked back into the garage and the bike was leaking fuel fuel into the ground! It was leaking out of the fuel breather tube. Was this because I over filled the tank? Or is there a bigger problem? Also there is fuel dripping from the small hole at the bottom of the petcock.. is this normal or will that need replaced? Thanks

Do you mean you ran out of fuel because you didn't switch the tap to reserve?
How much fuel was it leaking?

Re: F2 gas tank issue!!

When I ran out of fuel, I switched to reserve but there was nothing there. The tank was empty before even switching to reserve. when it was leaking after filling up, it was leaking fast! I grabbed the gas can and held it up to the tube. It eventually stopped and made an air hissing sound. The fuel was about 2 inches below the gas cap. Was the leak just caused by over filling?

Did you switch to reserve before the engine actually died though? The engine must be running to create vacuum to suck the fuel tap open to fill the float bowls. Otherwise, you would need to switch to prime and wait a minute for the float bowls to fill.
How much fuel actually leaked out though? If the engine was cold when you filled the tank and then you rode it home the fuel would've heated up and expanded so some was likely pushed out the vent hose.

Re: F2 gas tank issue!!

As soon as the engine started to die I switched to the reserve. But the fuel that should have been reserve was empty. The tank was empty down to where the petcock is located. I filled the tank almost to the brim and it emptied about 2 inches below the brim. the engine wasn't that cold when filling up

Re: F2 gas tank issue!!

bazzledazzle, I'm not saying you're crazy here, but are you certain that when you filled up the time before, you actually put the petcock back to the "On" position, facing down? The reason I ask, is that it sounds exactly like what happens when you run the bike with it already on reserve... you just run out!! With no .75 gallon backup! I've done it before.

Re: F2 gas tank issue!!

Jnsracing I'm pretty sure it was in the on position. I'm thinking my petcock may be broken?
