My wife is learning on our DR250S and it seems pretty easy to learn on plus you have to be pretty spastic to really f*ck upon a 250 (unless you are trying too).
I can't imagine trying to learn to ride sport-bikes on the street at age 16. I don't care how much dirt experience you have. Sure.. shifting, braking and controls basically translate but not much else (I rode and XR600 long before I got my first street bike and I damn near put myself into a tree on the fooker first day riding it )
Good luck. I'd start off in a cage but if you just can't do that.. try out a 250 mini-cruiser or a dual sport and BE CAREFUL! Cagers are lame. |

Take the MSF, which is free in PA, and get your license. Plus you'll learn a lot of good stuff at the MSF. Statistics show that most motorcycle accidents happen to those who are self-taught, as compared to those who have taken formal training. |

MSF is key to starting out and I recommend it to all people I talk to that ask about how to get started.
In the weekend that I went I watched people who didn't know what a clutch was or how to use it to actually being able to pass the test and keep it under control. Now don't get me wrong MSF doesn't mean you will never crash but it is a great starting point
Once you do that the more seat time you put in the better you will become

| Re: Which to get for first bike??? Isn't there a limit as to how long you can hold a permit? Isn't there a certain amount of time it's good for before you get the license? C'mon, licenses aren't THAT expensive, and you have to do it eventually. I really don't think you can ride on a permit indefinitely, they do expire. |

Then jump on a cbr250, for your first road bike. they're quick enough. When i had a 250 i was keeping up with all the 600's and 1000's in the mountains.
do it smart the first time, because you might not get another go at it if u dont |

| Re: Which to get for first bike??? expect to get hurt. then you will ride more within your abilities. Dont become over confident. You can get just as dead on a dirtbike as a street bike. Be careful, be patient. (I know, this is almost impossible for most 16yo )
A "sport" bike is an absolute disaster waiting to happen for a person with little or no experience. Any bike with a standard riding postion will be better. A dualsport would be a great starter bike that could last you through school if need be. You can pick up used KLR, DR or XR bikes pretty resonably and the insurance might be a lot cheaper too. |

| Re: Which to get for first bike??? i'm sure you've heard this before, but take these words to heart. if you do start riding on the street (you should do this in the dirt also) WEAR YOUR GEAR. gloves, helmet, boots....all that stuff. it'll save your life if you end up needing it...trust me i speak from experience ***ouch***. another thing, ride within your abilities. you don't need to be doing 3rd gear wheelies a week after you get the bike. just chill and learn to ride and enjoy it. it comes with time no matter how much "natural talent" you have. PA has some kick ass twisties...have fun and take it easy, you don't always have to be dragging a knee to have fun. just my .02
oh, and i'd reccomend a used F4 or F4I...VERY forgiving bikes and they're still plenty fast. |
