| Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock A friend of mine, phugged up his F4 (2000 model, carb model). He IM'd me the other day and told me he had left his disc lock on and got about 10 feet and it locked up. He stated that since this happened, the front brake lever has been dead. I asked the obvious "Is one of the rotors warped?", he said he didn't think so. I asked him then to run his fingertip along the front rotor and look for any irregularities, and see if a rotor is warped, he said he couldn't feel anything. Tonight, he brought the bike over, I converted my rear stand because he didn't have spools, and found a pin that would work for the steering head. I pulled the calipers off, and spun the wheel, sure enough the right hand rotor is warped.
For those who have done this (I know it's embarassing), is there anything else I should look for? I looked at the calipers and they seem ok, the right rotor is definitely warped. Does anyone know of a shop, that will retrue the rotor? I looked up his bike on the microfiche and RonAyers charges $200 and some change for each rotor. I searched on the .org and found people paying just over $200 for a set of EBC rotors. He isn't anal about the bike, so if I can find a place that will retrue the rotor, I'm sure he'd be down for that. And anything I should look for on the calipers? If you've done this, what amount of damage occurred? The calipers look OK to me, only thing I can find wrong is that right hand rotor.
He is embarassed, but I told him that I've read about it countless times. And he doesn't know about the issue with Kryptonite, you can pick the lock with a pen |

| Re: Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock Oh yeah, forgot to mention. When I was removing the axle, it was a real bitch. I had to pound on it, to remove it from the left hand side. Any Honda of mine, once the pinch bolts are removed, or loosened, I could pull the axle out with relative ease. His axle was a real bitch to pull out, had to beat on it with a socket extension and hammer, and hammered it out. I'm now wondering what other problems he could have....... |

| Re: Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock I did that with my f4i , I was a manager at a warehouse and of course I did it in front of about 20 employes, I am sure they had a blast
anyhow I was leaving pretty fast and the front lever was mushy but the brakes would work if pumped so I got home.
I got the disk fixed by a crap yard they straightened it for 40$ and the brakes ran fine after that. I would not worry about anything else, change the disk and see.

| Re: Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock I bought a used wheel & rotors off ebay once to use for a spare. Got it up on the balancer to find the thing was not very straight, not even close (rotors included). Anyway after some searching I found a guy. I sent him the front wheel and he straightened it (along with the rotors) for $85 *not including shipping*. Got the wheel back and it was more true than my original! I was very happy, seemed like I got a brand new wheel and rotors by the time he was done with it. I don't have his info handy and I'm not sure if he'll do a rotor only (probably will), if you still haven't found someone hit me up and I'll dig up his info. PM or email if you still need it |

| Re: Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock Been down this road. There's probably a straightening service, like has been mentioned, in your area. We have the The Frame Man here in the Sacramento area. Have them also check the wheel and axle even though it's probaby just the disk.
One other thing worth a look is the caliper body around the mounting tabs and also the mounting tabs on the forks for cracks/damage.
edit: And tell your buddy to throw away the disk lock..it won't stop a serious thief.

I think you can get the old one replaced for free but I'm not positive. check on that.
They sell little wires that attach to the disc lock and the other end to the handlebar, just to remind you its on and to take it off. Cheap insurance.

This guy did wonders with my front wheel after its' mating with a large boulder. You can't even tell it was damaged. He also checked my rotors to make sure they were still good. I have nothing but good things to say about him and his prices are fantastic. I have many friends who have bent forks and other stuff and he has fixed them all.

| Re: Need help (rotor re-trueing) Disc Lock He twisted the forks in the triples. Personally, I'd probably replace the disc if it hit hard enough to tweak everything.
I'd also put a lot of energy into looking for cracks on the caliper mounts and on the caliper. |
