Fuel gauge comparsion question...

So, my buddy bought an F4i the same time I got the 600RR and the fuel gauges seem completely different in behavior (have had both bikes about a month). Mine is always active in reading fuel level and then starts this ambiguous flashing of the last element "near empty" while the F4i appears to only become active once it's down to "reserve" level and then provides meaningful information.

I've filled mine up when this last flashing element starts and each time it takes <3 gal to top it off. The tank is specced to be about 4.5 gal. The meter itself seems to be fairly non-linear in behavior, decreasign at the top faster then the bottom. Am I right in assuming the flashign bar means I've got ~1.5 gal left to go? Can I expect it to switch the display to something useful (like the F4i) once it's "through" that flashing element and into the "reserve" or do I just get to hang out and wonder about the final 33% of capacity?

The manual isn't terribly helpful on the behavior and I've been a little reluctant to ride it through that last flashing bar not even knowing if it works right...
Danke.

Re: Fuel gauge comparsion question...

I've never had the last bar do anything but flash once I got that low on fuel. I've also gone ~170 miles to 3.9 gallons before and I had my fingers crossed hoping I would make it to the next gas station. That's the most fuel I've ever put in. The places I normally ride don't have too much around so I'm really not too keen on finding out if the last bar on the fuel gauge will do something else because I really don't want to push my bike anyplace...

Like most bikes, you're better off using the odometer as a speedo. If it takes 4.5gal, take it to mean say 4.3gal or so, then work on that. If you're only putting in 3gal when it starts flashing (and I take it this 3gal is consistent), then work out how much extra range you'll get by looking at how many miles you've done so far. From then on, you know how much you'll get out of a tank, and should be able to go pretty much to empty.

I ran a 600rr dry last summer and had to push it 2 blocks to a gas station. I think that was after about 300Km.

esoteric, I get the same behavior from my fuel gauge on my 600RR. I will usually never push it once the last bar starts flashing. I ended up with around 100-110 miles before I fill up and it take about 3.5-3.75 gallons.

Pretty wild. This thing is hard enough to backup from a declining parking space, I don't think I'm up for a long walk with it. AAA or HRC should be able to help with a gallon, though, and I never get my moneys worth from AAA with my Mazda anyway ;-)
