charging the battery ..help

03 600rr

I took the battery out and left it in the basement over winter. I put the battery back into my bike last nite but the bike won't start. There is some light on the gauges but bike won't start.

So I borrowed a charger from my friend:

Manual 6V 10 A
Automatic 12V 2 A
Automatic 12V 10A

Which setting should I use and for how long?!?!

Re: charging the battery ..help

12V 2A It's a slow trickle charge. Leave it on that for 24-36 hours....should be good to go. Chances are though that your battery is shot and you'll have to replace it.

Yep, it's probably shot. You should keep it on a trickle charger all winter.

Re: charging the battery ..help

Agree with the above replies for settings. I don't have a Battery Tender to leave on my battery all winter, but I do bring it in the house and put it on a trickle charger overnight once a month.

Re: charging the battery ..help

This past winter, I put mine on the trickle charge for most of the winter. I unplugged it every few weeks but mainly left it charging the whole time.

Buy a Battery Tender, its worth every penny and still cheaper than a battery.

From the shop manual: Charging current: Normal - 0.9A / 5-10h, Quick 4.5A / 1h.

Re: charging the battery ..help

Before I hook the batt to the charger, the reading was 10.8V. After charging it, 12.6V...and the bike started fine

The battery was left on a piece of wood in the basement.

I didn't think a 2V drop in charge would make such a big diff.

Re: charging the battery ..help

Think that's bad? Try starting a 12 year old 2 valve Ducati with anything other than a perfect battery on a warm day! Actually, age has nothing to do with it, it's just a cold blooded beast!

The charge rates should also be on the battery if you can still read them.
