need help oil change for f4i

I have an 01 f4i and I need to do an oil change for the season. If I look through the looking glass at the oil level when the bike is upright it is a circle and in the circle are 2 level lines, im guessing. Now the oil is at the first line at the bottom, does that mean its low and I shouldn't ride until I change it because I dont want to mess around with the engine. The oil looked to be very clear, opposed to the oil in my car. lol. A friend of mine is going to show me how to change the oil over the weekend but the weather is just so nice that I want to ride now but dont want to ride with not enough oil for the engine. Thanx.

If it's at the bottom line while the bike is upright (not on it's stand), then just add a bit of oil to get it between the two lines. Don't fill above the top line.

If the oil is at or above the first line you won't hurt your engine at all by riding it for a few days. If it is below that line or over the top line then you need to adjust the oil level.

I know the weather has been great here but I always change the oil first after the winter before I venture out. A lot of acids build up in the oil over the winter (which is not good for the motor) so it's a good idea to change it before riding it.

I do need to change my oil but I have never done it before and the bike only came with a french manual,??? A friend of mine was supposed to help me but our schedules always clash, Do you think that it would be a simple enough task that I could do by myself from reading an outline or should I wait for someone to show me first? Bear in mind that I am not that handy. But I do want to learn how to do these things for myself.

its a pretty easy task. first I'm not sure if you have to take the plastics off of that bike or not to do it. If you can get the oil filter out without the plastic off then leave them (or if you want you can take them off). get the engine up to temp so he oil is nice and warm. put a drain pan underneath and unscrew the drain plug. once the oil is drained put the plug (bolt) back in with a new washer on it. Don't overtighten it though but make sure its snug.

cover the exhaust headers below the oil filter with tin foil (you don't have to do this bit it makes cleanup easier). unscrew the oil filter and dump the oil into the drain pan. wipe some oil on the rubber gasket on the new filter and hand tighten. clean off any oil that got on stuff.

fill it back up through the little hole at the top ofengine case (above the sight glass). its probably takes a little under 4qts. fill it to in between the 2 lines in the sight glass with the bike held level. Once you have it close to full start the bike up and let it idle for a minute or 2 the shut it off and wait a minute before checking again. This ensures the filter fills up. I like to fill the filter once and let it soak in before I put it on but thats optional.

O k that sounds easy enough I just need to go get the stuff for it, would I have to go to a bike place to get the oil and filters or would any like pep boys type of place have bike filters Also I have a rear stand for my bike should I put it up on that or is the kick stand fine, After reading over what I write I must sound so stupid to all you guys,sorry, But fortunately enough for me what I lack in knowledge for the bike I make up in other things lol.

Auto parts are likely to have filters. At the risk of starting a war I would avoid Fram. Purolator and Wix are both good enough. On the oil DO NOT use any oil that contains moly. Avoid anything that 'conserves energy' as this means moly or similar. A motorcycle oil for wet clutches should be enough.

DISCLAIMER: I run motul and K&N on the RC and RR. Honda oil and Honda filters on the Ascot

If you're near a Honda dealer, I would just buy the correct oil and filter from them to avoid any problems. It will cost you some more, but at least it will be the right stuff for your bike.

I like to use the Honda filters as well, never had any issues with their filters on both the F4 and 954. As for oil you can pickup Motul 5100 Semi Synthetic for $24.99 at McBride Cycle in TO. A torque wrench would be handy as well. Good luck

ok I did it very easy actually I bought 4L of oil and just kept an eye on it after filling 3L so it was right at the top of the second fill line thanx a lot to all ur help till next time...

ya this is a key point. some jerkball tightened mine too tight because i was unable to do my own oil changes, which i now do. The bolt was stripped so bad i'm still struggling to get it off and have broken 2 socket wrenches.

2001 - 2003 F4is should take what seems to be 3 Liters.
The specs say 3.3 Liters, but after squirting 3 liters into my engine, it was already touching the top line.
