tire removal

i'm going to the track this year and its finally time to do this myself.
i looked in the shop manual and for the front tire, it said to remove the fender, calipers, and to loosen and pinch bolts. and i was just wondering if all that stuff was really necessary just to take the axle out. and how much grease should i use on the axle for "reinsertion"

Re: tire removal

You shouldn't have to mess with the fender, but if you don't rempve the calipers you can't take off the wheel, since they're bolted inside the width of the rim.

Carefully hang them with wire or a bungee cord so they dont stress the brake lines.

You have to loosen the pinch bolts to remove the axle.

Now, when you put it all back together, use blue locktite and a torque wrench. Follow the recommendations in the book for torque values, and don't overtighten. Pay attention to the arrows on the wheel and tire.

I just spray the axle with WD or a light coat of white lithium grease. It doesn't take much.

Re: tire removal

As CBRVFR said, you should not have to removed the fender. I have swapped my tires out many times this year and have never had to take the fender off my 600RR.

Re: tire removal

not WD as it is a penetrating lube that is meant to DRY out with time. Also I undo the caliper and put them on the fender so they don't dangle.

Re: tire removal

Sheep, I can show you the exhaust pipe on my CR250 which was sprayed at least 2 months ago and is still damp/slick to the touch.

If anything though, I use grease on the axles.

According to WD40 you are correct but I would not use it on my equipment

Re: tire removal

are the spacers any big deal??
and I assume the rear is basically the same process, and what size socket fits for the rear on '03 600 rr?? its freaking huge.
at track day events, do they require you to take the rotors off, too?

Re: tire removal

The rear socket is a 32mm on the '05, I assume it's the same on the '03.
And why on earth would you remove your rotors to get your tires changed?

Yes, the spacers are a very big deal. They aren't alike and have to be reinstalled correctly, otherwise you can get binding of the wheel.

Not sure what you mean about the rotors and track days...

Re: tire removal

well, I was going to take the tire off myself and take to the shop. the shop i normally go to was backed up for about a week. and this new shop told me that if i were to bring in just the tire, that i would have to take the rotors off too. yeah, i know. i thought it sounded odd, too, but i just wanted the damn tire on

I picked my sockets at sears. Those two socket sizes only come in 1/2 inch drive. So, you will also need an two or mixture of 1/2 inch socket wrench or a "brake bar" (does not have the ratchet mechnism at the end). Should also have a torque wrench that could be 1/2 in. drive. Or buy one of the sizes in a wrench.

Re: tire removal

Removing the rotos is not (necessarily) a bad idea because they are very fragile.
