95 cbr f3 issues... electrical?

i just bought a 95 cbr 600f3. its my first bike, its got about 38.000 miles on it, i got it for dirt cheap, just lookin for a bike to learn on before i start ridin something newer/nicer. i just had it in the shop for a tune up before the season began, and apparently there were some major issues with the engine, the valves were way off among other things. but they got the engine sorted out.

heres the real issue: its never been real reliable in terms of being able to turn it on, and by that i mean the battery is always kicked or close to it. what i've been doing lately is unhooking one of the terminals of the battery everytime i park the bike for more than about 5 minutes. i take this to mean theres a drain somewhere, and i think it's my alternator. i got 'er fired up and got 'er at a good idle and then unhooked the battery and she died after about 4 more revolutions of the engine.

if the problem is w my alternator, might that explain this problem- its only happened like 3 or 4 times, but i'll have the bike on for about 5 minutes, i'll get on it and stand it up to put up the stand, and it just dies. then i try to start it up again, and nothing. lights, blinkers, horn etc still works, but not even a click from the starter. but then i can jump it off my car battery and she starts up again just fine.

if it is my alternator what are my options in terms of fixing/replacing it? whats the best thing to do or wheres the best place to buy.

help please, i'm just tryin to learn a thing or two here...o yea and get my bike back on the road

Your bike will not run with the battery disconected because you have a cdi box that needs the battery.

The best way to find your draw on the battery is to connect a amp meter inline with the battery and then disconnect stuff till it zeros, start with fuses and they will narrow it to a curcuit.

Re: 95 cbr f3 issues... electrical?

here's a couple things
-you can't jump your bike off your if the car is running, only if the ignition of the car is off, or else it will mess up the charging sys. on the bike.
-you need to have your batt load tested
-and charging output tested

if your stator or regulator rectifier is bad then you need to replace both of them because damage can show up later in the one you don't replace (damaging the part that was just replaced)and you will constantly chase your tale. The f2 f3 were notorious for the regulator recitifiers going bad because of the lack of cooling fins on it.
Good Luck

I would have 2 say it's thr regulator/rectifier, i had a simular issue sooner or later the reg will burn out & no juice will go 2 the bike! It's a really common problem. I purchased an aftermarket product with cooling fins & haven't had a prob since!
