| Few questions Hi all,
I'm planning to get a 2006 600RR, should I get a used or new one? It's going to be my first sport bike, I used to ride mountain bikes and used to ride my friends' sport bikes. I have a 2 hour commute per week and a daily commute of 40 min, would the RR handle that without any issues?
Also, I go to school and I'm worried about bike theft in MA. First, I live in an apartment complex, what is a secure way to park the bike? Second, when I go to campus or park on the street downtown (in Boston and Amherst) what can I do to prevent it from getting stolen? I'm getting the orange tribal color which is eye catching and I'm sure many theives will be eyeing my bike. Finally, what montly rate should I expect from insurane? Just getting my license and taking MSA course.
Thanks for your help. |

Insurance is based on age, experience. safety course etc. Are you planning on financing this bike? if so, full comprehensive is high depending on age.
I do not secure my bike at work but i work on military base. When i lived in an apartment , i used a kryptonite u lock and my car alarm( bike was parked sideways and pulled the car right in front of it) |

Sportbikes aren't great commuters. Uncomfortable for that use. |

What about in Winter when you were living in an apratment, did you cover it? |

Use mine for commuting but in the process of saving for SV or even a DL, could a KTM supermoto (hooligan bike) as well. Something that is up right, could put a trunk on or even panniers. Always nice to have storage on a commuter, rain gear and such. Also, less likely to get stolen.
F-4 has a softer seat and less aggressive stance over the tank. |

U locks work and cabling it to something solid like a light pole. Have heard stories where bikes are picked up, put on a trailer and hauled off.
OH, here is something to think about LOJACK. |

| Re: Few questions Try a F4i, they are a little more beginner friendly.
I personally wouldn't buy a bike if i lived in an apt w/o a garage. they are way to easy to get stolen. But I just hate apts, have had too many bad experiences.
Insuarnce is based on age, driving record, marital status, and they ask me if I keep it in a garage...will be more expensive if you dont have a garage.
If you take the safety class it will also lower your insurance and you can learn a lot there. |

OH, here is something to think about LOJACK. | That's exactly what I'm worried about, some guys with a truck picking up the bike and leaving. I don't even know if a lock or a security alarm is going to stop them. Now if I don't get a bike security would be the reason. |

Welcome | Yeah man, for some reason RR seems very attractive to me. I can just listen to its sound all day, actually when I get it i'll put its sound on my MP3 player |

stock cd player was stolen??? window busted out, my wifes car was backed into.....
My buddy lives in an apt and he keeps his bike at his moms house (lives about 5 mins away) always an option if they live close....and they dont mind. |

| Re: Few questions if you respect it you should be alright on a 600rr. just take the time to learn it.
I've left my bike parked in Boston before without issue. granted once was during a Sox day game (I parked it behind the MFA) and the other times I've usually been pretty close to it (up Newbury St or around Fanuel Hall). I wouldn't reccomend leaving it anywhere for in Boston for any significant amount of time though.
As far as insurance, how old are you and how's your driving reccord.

As far as insurance, how old are you and how's your driving reccord. | I'm 26, my driving record is clean (one tiny accident 4 years ago no speeding tickets). I'm a sane driver I won't be going crazy on the 600RR. What do you think my insurance range would be? My friends who owns a 1000RR said $40-50 a month. I mainly will be leaving it at Harvard square when I go to school for few hours and that's it. When I'm at work it's pretty safe and many riders just leave thier biks in parking lot. I'm going to put a security alarm in it and always chain it to something. Also, no one mentioned anything about getting a new one Vs a used one. What do you think? |

| Re: Few questions $50 a month sounds like a decent estimate but might be a little onthe low side. I'm paying I think $1800 a year for full coverage plus $10k in medical coverage for my 929. granted my bike is more to insure anyway and I have a surcharge of 4 (at fault accident from when I crashed my last bike) and I live in Randolph which is fairly high rate town. 40 minutes away sounds like you're pretty far out from Boston so that'll save you some money.
as far as used vs new it pretty much depends on what you can find. if you're looking for a leftover orange one you might be able to get a good deal. I also wouldn't shy away from a used one, its a Honda so it won't have many if any problems depending on how good it was treated by the previous owner.

Actaully 40 min commute is from my work to my house. Also, you brought up a good point. Most riders I talked to said not to get comprehnsive coverage, what do you think?
There is a dealer (cycle design) who said would get me a good deal on a new 600RR (owner is my friend's best friend). I also found some other good used ones (not orange though) that were taken care of. I guess in that situation it makes more sense to get a used one and save few grands. right?
Do you go biking with other guys in your area or in Boston? There are not that many around where I live, hopefully we can go biking in spring when I get the bike, thanks for your help man. |

| Re: Few questions insurance should be fairly cheap in Southborough. I'd still get all the insurance you can afford (which I'm hoping is full coverage).
if you can find a deal on a used one I'd say go for it. 03-04 are pretty much the same except for colors and 05 it got an upgrade, upside down forks, radial mount brakes... Seeing as you're new to the sport I highly doubt you'd notice any difference riding an 03-04 as opposed to a newer one.
I pretty much ride by myself now because of various reasons concerning my friends. If I have the time I'll pretty much ride anytime anywhere and with almost anyone. Riding in Boston got really boring as my friends and I did that a lot last summer. Once you get your bike and you wanna go for a ride let me know.

| Re: Few questions Check out Geico or Progressive to get an insurance quote of your own there are too many eciding factors for us to tell you. Take 10 minutes and find out online. If parking it in the city and cannot get it into a parking garage then think about, chaining it, Lojack and an alarm. remember the RR is no joke, it's a fast bike and even in experienced hands can be a handful. Take the courses and be careful. Let us know how it turns out, and we want pics too. |
