Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

Does anybody have any experience with installing aftermarket clip-ons on a F4i (2001 possibly)? I'm running into some issues and questions concerning clearance and where to mount the clip-ons on my 2001. The issues also involve what brand to go with (e.g. Vortex vs. Woodcraft).

Thanks!

Re: Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

I just put woodcrafts on my 01 this season. They seem to bring he clipon up higher than stock, which had some clearance issues. The two biggest issues I had were that the throttle cables seem to hit my gauges at full lock. This may not be an issue on a stock bike though .. I have an aftermarket fairing stay and I'm not sure my gauges are anywhere near where stock are, since I fabed up a bracket for them.

The other issue I had (but wasnt very worried about either) was that the collar where they attach to the fork tubes was taller than stock. That meant that the clipons covered the whole upper part of the fork, and actually stuck out slightly past it. I eventually ended up lowering my front by a bit for other reasons (helped turn-in A LOT), which solved that issue in the process. Like I said though, even without dropping the front I wasnt worried about it. I took it out on the track that way before playing with the triples and had no issues. Just make sure it is evenly tightened.

Also, with my brembo master cylinder the brake lines hit the gauges. But I dont really think the stock one did. Pretty sure it was ok with stock.

Re: Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

My intent for putting on aftermarket clip-ons is that I want the clip-ons to be lower to help me get off the bike and maintain position in the turns. Currently the stock clip-ons are so high that when I try to hang off the bike in a turn, that I am having difficulty getting my whole body over.

So if the Woodcrafts place the clip-ons higher than stock, I don't see a point in getting the Woodcrafts.

Stupid question, is there a possibility that you have installed the clip-ons upside down and causing the higher height?

Re: Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

This is an e-mail from Eric Wood from Woodcraft:

In a message dated 10/17/2006 2:09:17 PM Eastern Standard Time, thi.pham@gmail.com writes:
I would like to get more information if available concerning fitment issues of Woodcraft 43mm clip-ons for a 2001 F4i. I called Woodcraft this morning and a gentlemen informed me that Woodcraft clip-ons require 35mm of space to mount to the tubes/forks. However, after talking to a few racers/track junkies the question that comes into play is where to mount the clip-ons. In particular, should the clip-ons be mounted above or below the top triple clamp. My 2001 F4i currently has race plastic and just eye-balling the space, below the top triple clamp does not seem feasible.
Yes, on the F4i there is not enough space on the bottom, as the fairing and ram air tubes get in the way. I should also let you know that in street trim, the bars will contact the fairing at full lock. This is easily recitified by racers that have aftermarket fairing brackets, as they are easily bent out of the way and all is good. On the street parts, this is not able to be done.
I hope this information helps your purchasing decision.

Thanks,

Eric Wood

Re: Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

they are not on upside down. the part that is higher is where it connecs to the forks, the angle feels like it is a little steeper than stock and where the hand positioning is might the same or lower.

One advantage to aftermarket is that they dont have a fixed position. I think mine are swung back a little more than stock, but that is where they felt most comfortable.

It may still be something to consider.

Re: Aftermarket Clip-ons and F4i

If you just want them lower, can you just put the stock ones under the triple? When I got my Hawk it had CBRF2 bars mounted under (about 1-1/2 inches under) the triple and they worked pretty good until I switched out for clip-ons to get a different down angle ... and get room to mount a damper
