F4i FI Malfunction Indicator Light Codes?

I have just purchased a 2001 F4i. It was in rough shape when I got it, so I am in the process of rebuilding it. It had a PCII and Erion exhaust on it, both of which I removed in favor of a stock exhaust.

Over the weekend we got the bike running. It took a few tries to get it to crank, but it started up and ran. There was a bit of white smoke, but I attribute that to time sitting and/or residue in the gas tank. The problem is that the FI light stays on solid. In addition, the bike will idle up as it should before revving down, but then will sporadically idle back up.

As the battery was shot and we were really just interested in seeing if we could get the bike running, we jumped it. I've read in a couple of places that battery could cause this -- in this case, would the jump have caused the issue?

Any further information on MIL codes, how to read them or other general suggestions would be appreciated. I'm new to the F4i and welcome any input.

Thanks,
Meghan

your right, the battery can cause this, did you jump it with a car or a bike? if it was with a car was the car running or not? I have been told by numerous people that if you are going to jump a motorcycle with a car, make sure the car is NOT running. This is because you can kill the juice in the battery for good, and you will need to get a new one. Now that doesn't happen all the time, but a good portion of the time it does happen, i used to work at a motorcycle mechanic shop, and alot of new people to the motorcycle world had that problem. The FI light, that i don't know about, it could just be from the fact that you jumped a dead battery..

gl w/ that one

Re: F4i FI Malfunction Indicator Light Codes?

Thanks for the response. I've since gotten a new battery for the bike and the FI light is now on solid. It also doesn't seem to idle smoothly, which sounds in line with a problem with fuel injection, so I guess my next step will be cleaning the throttle bodies.

Check for vacuum leaks as well, they can lead to poor idle. Also, did you buy new coil drivers? (the part that goes onto the spark plug) They can be bad, and you wouldn't know it.

does the bike rev fine, or is it rough at all rpms?

Are there often issues with ignitor coils? The bike has been sitting for a while...

It seems roughest at lower RPMs. Above about 4500 it seems to smooth out.
