Hallo All

I have been experiencing a strange problem, as soon as my bike gets warm it splutters (mostly in low revs <7k) it started shortly after i blew out my air filter (bmc). I have replaced the fuel filter and checked petrol line all is fine.
I have drained my carbs replaced the foam filter in one of the small boxes on the direct induction. I'm stumped as to what it can be? once above 7k it accelerates smoothly up to 12k spluts once and then hits red line. I have also lost about 15 kph on top end speed.

Any ideas as to what i should look out for?

have you replaced the air filter? I ask because you said you blew it, but then you said you only replaced the fuel filter and mentioned nothing about the air filter again. .

how old is the fuel in it?

I took the bike into a shop today and they cleaned the carbs as well as re-oiling the air filter (they said it is re-servicable). They mentioned that my timing chain is on its way out. I dont know what is happening.

My bike is still spluttering but now when it is cold.

I drive the bike daily, the feul should be ok. do you think it could be spark-plugs?

i'm not very educated on these sorts of things, but may i suggest that moisture could have possibly gotten inside the gas tank?

Carbs could need synchronizing,
you may have over oiled the air filter,
it could be bad gas,
even a clogged jet or damaged pilot jet... even though they`ve been cleaned doesn`t mean something wasn`t missed in the proccess

I`d suggest changing the fuel and checking the lines. Next try running the stock air filter in it to see if it runs any better. If it does clean out the BMC and re-oil it with less oil. If that doesn`t work take it to the shop and have them synchronize the carbs. After that the only thing left to do is to redo the carbs to see if anything was missed.

Sounds like alot of work I know but it`s a proccess of elimination

it has 66800 kilos on the clock. I also think that the tank or one of the fuel lines could be blocked. I will clean it tonight and see what happens.
There is a hell of a difference in performance after the carbs were cleaned, it has the same pull now when im lifting as what it had when i was driving alone. do you think that the plugs could be failing?

i am not sure what the service intervals are on that bike, i would read through the book and see what they reccomend for time/mileage for replacement. if the carbs were messed up and dumping too much it could mess the plugs up, but if they were messed up they should cause the bike to miss at all rpm, especially high rpm. so i think you may have another issue

I have read the manual and it says that it could be incorrect ignition timing, dirty carbs or failing spark plugs.

A couple of machanics told me that my timing chain is about to snap. could this cause a problem ie. incorrect ignition timing or is it the CDI that causes it?

p.s. I've checked the filter, fuel line ect.

if your chain is in that bad of shape i would start there.

Before I get any work done on my bike I made sure that it is the timing chain. I've been to about 5 bike shops and most say that it is the timing chain but when i mention that the sound is there when the bike is cold and goes away as soon as the bike is warm, they give me a dumb struck look cause if the timing chain is worn it should make more noise when its hot. The ticking has been there for about 6 months now and is getting worse? I refered to the manual and they say it could be the chain, incorrect valve adjustment, broken valve spring, chain tensioner.

I'm stumped? any ideas

hmmmm my f3 makes those clicking sounds sometime too, my bro (who owned it before me) says we need to adjust some valves.

start at the easiest thing?
