Friend needs some help...

So i did a little searching and couldnt really find what i was looking for. He's looking at picking up a 2002 f4i 600 this weekend. Just in talking to him i dont think hes done the necessary research before buying one so im trying to help him out the best i can. i was just wondering if there were any problems associated with this year and model, and what he should look for when inspecting the bike, i believe he said it only has 11k miles on it and is hoping to get it for 3.5-4k is this a good price? thanks guys.

Here's an excellent guide for evaluating a used bike before buying. MC News says the bike is worth $4,750.

Re: Friend needs some help...

Thanks a lot. Is there anything he should be looking for when he goes to inspect?

Re: Friend needs some help...

yeah we're definatively going to give a thorough looking over. the guy sounds pretty legit from talking to him on the phone, seems like a nice guy and that he'd be willing to work with my friend. is there any specific problems with that year we should be aware of?

A lot have problems with the cam chain tensioner. From what I hear you will notice an abnormal buzzing or vibration at certain RPMs. Not a big deal to replace from what I hear. I'm riding an '02 F4i and have no complaints. Only have 2600 miles on it though so I'm not sure what else to worry about.

Re: Friend needs some help...

I have always heard of the CCT problem also. But when i had my F4i i never had a problem with it. I would say that is a good price. The guy who bought my 02 F4i is trying to sell it and i would say it has about 10000 on it and he wants 4k for it.

Re: Friend needs some help...

I have spent the last few years paying my way through school by working for a landscaping company. I spent a lot of time in garages wiring sprinkler clocks. Last May I was in a garage and there was this F4i sitting there looking absolutely untouched other than a thin layer of dust. While I was talking to the lady about her clock I commented that I liked the bike. She responded by saying that it was her husbands and that it was for sale. I wasn't seriously looking at the time so I didn't ask for any specifics like price, mileage, etc. A couple months later I had decided that it was time, my wife gave permission, so I started looking. Figured I'd spend around $3500 once my med school loans came in. I happened to get called back to that house in July. I didn't think to much of it because the bike looked like it would be well out of my price range. I asked the lady anyway when I was done. She said that they wanted 5K for it because that is what they owed. Then the kicker she told me it only had about 800 miles on it and that her husband had only ridden it once a year each year since he had bought it new in '02. He had traded in an FZ1 that he had bought just before that but decided it was too much bike, got this bike and then switched jobs so he wasn't able to ride anymore. He was out of town for two weeks so I wasn't able to talk to him for awhile. When he got home I met him, the bike actually had 691 miles on it. This guy was 45, living in a 500K house, and had never had the bike over 80 miles an hour. Normally I wouldn't have believed the not over 80 thing but if you had met the guy you would know that it was true. It was just a mid-life crisis purchase. I got three new helmets, three different jackets, and three sets of gloves with the bike. I sold one matching set of helmet, gloves, and jacket for $400, and kept the other two sets which fit my wife and I perfectly. I charged the battery, rode it home, and changed the oil. I added 2000 miles before I got snowed in.
