motorcycle battery acid?

my bud has an 02' r6 with 17000 miles on it. just recently (three weeks) ago the battery leaked acid all over his swingarm, shock, and some on the frame and left rearset. he cleaned the acid off the bike after it had set for a week but the aluminum parts are still stained from the acid. the bike is way out of warranty and he wanted to know if the acid could cause any structural damage to the aluminum or is it just cosmetic. he replaced the battery and is still riding the bike. if its only cosmetic he doesn't care. thanks

Re: motorcycle battery acid?

Sufuric acid is used to anodize aluminum and increase corrosion resistance, so it can't be all that bad:

Anodic Treatment of Aluminum Alloys Sulfuric Acid Process, Dyed Coating

Re: motorcycle battery acid?

Just make sure that it is for sure neutralized. Mix a little bit of baking soda in some water and scrub it on the affected surfaces. That will neutralize it enough to prevent any unwanted "chemistry" from taking place. Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)is a fairly strong diprotic acid so you don't want it just sitting around but it probably hasn't caused any real problems.
