Honda CBR 600 1999 leaking fuel

Hi,

I own a 1999 Honda CBR and it has been sitting in the garage for about 4-5 months now.

After the weather here in seattle changed to riding weather I went and turned it on.

The bike did start up after a couple of times and then to my dispair fuel started leaking whenever the bike was running and the fuel knob was turned on.

I removed the ferring to find out what went wrong and this is what I realized that there are 2 screws beneath the tank on the right hand side from which the fuel was oozing out.

Any suggestions to how should I go about fixing this issue. i was thinking of dismantling the fuel tank and tightening up the screws.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Amit

Do you have any pics of it? And where was your bike stored for the winter? Could it be a seal of sorts?

Re: Honda CBR 600 1999 leaking fuel

on the newer ones (I'm just going to assume the older ones are the same) there is a Service Bolt and Washer that is used to release fuel pressure and drain remaining fuel before pulling the fuel pump. Check this bolt to be sure that the washer isn't screwed up or that the bolt isn't loose for whatever reason. There is also a "seal" that goes around the fuel pump, if the pump is ever taken out this seal is to be replaced, perhaps yours has just cracked and is leaking from that. Then of course there could be the ever popular fuel line cracked, clamp on fuel line came loose. If you are able to I would go ahead and pull the tank, check all the connections and try to visually inspect the seal between the fuel pump base and the tank (might not be able to see a crack even if there is a leak there but what the hey worth a shot while you have it apart).

Re: Honda CBR 600 1999 leaking fuel

I have a '99 also. Removing the tank is only four bolts, fuel line, vent line(s) and the fuel level sending unit plug in's. Very easy and you will see much more once the tank is off. The fuel pump sits along the frame with a short hose to the tank. Make sure the petcock is turned off when you remove the tank(don't ask me why I'm telling you this). Inspect, replace any questionable fittings and lines and you should be back in business. Just make sure you mark which fuel sending wires came of which posts(again, don't ask why I'm telling you this).
