| 520 Conversion????? I hear a lot of guys talking about this mod. i also see them all over ebay and other sites. Is there that big of an acceleration gain from it? i'm guessing i will lose some fuel economy. has anyone done it and can give some insight. i'm also curious about what kind of rpm's i'll be running as a result. i am currently running the stock 525 (14/43) gearing on my 98 F3. i average about 45-45mpg's, and run at around 6200rpm's at 80mph. Will i feel like i am running in 5th on the freeway. just wondering if it is worth all the hype. you know what they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? i think i am asking the wrong question. i did get a much better understanding about the difference on the different chains. Thanks for the link. I am more interested in changing the gear ratio. I know i will take some off the top end (i never get there anyway) but will it cause the engine to run at rpm levels that will cause more wear and tear? i would like a little more acceleration, but not at the expense of my engine life. any thoughts.... |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? Ah, you're talking about changing the sprockets. I have a 1000rr, but for you the 600rr runs 16/46 stock, my understanding is that for your bike, going 1 down on the front, 2 up in the back (15/48) is optimum.
Yes, you'll run at a slightly higher cruising rpm, but nothing that's gonna damage the engine.
I'm NOT a mechanic by any means, be sure you check with others too.
Search around the posts here on the site too.
**If you do change the sprockets, you might consider a SpeedoHealer because it will throw off the speedo doing the conversion** |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? I'm down 1 F and plus 2 B. Speedo is off by roughly 10MPH (most of the time). Its not like your engine is going to idle faster and such but lets say going 50 MPH on your bike puts you at 4000RPMs in 6th right now, do the conversion and to do the same speed your bike will have to go 5000 or so RPMs. My bike red lines at 14000 so I'm guessing it can handle that extra 1000 RPMs at the lower speeds. |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? i have an F3 with 15/43 oem gearing. Anyways, -1/+2 is the "optimal" mod. that would put me at 14/45. will i need a different length chain. i have a 108 link chain now. i guess it will be like running in 5th on the freeway. who really every uses 6th anyway?? |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? Yeah, you'll need a longer chain...and it will feel like your running a gear down on the freeway. |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? Gas mileage should go down with lower gearing. Anyone notice how much of a difference there is with a particular change in gearing? |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? Anyone know the optimal gearing for a 929?
Going down one in the front sprocket would be inexpensive, but will everything wear out quicker because of it?
Is one tooth down in the front noticeable? If so, how noticeable. Is it like I couldn't roll on throttle in 2nd gear and have the front come up, but now it does? |

i'm running -1 in the front, and it seems about right for me. the change was definitely noticeable. in first, the front comes up even easier/quicker, and it really mitigates the below 3k stumble.
difference in speed/rpm is ~6% which makes that less than 10 mph and 500rpm on the freeway.
regarding the front coming up in 2nd, i'm sure it would. but i'm rarely in the powerband in 2nd wot. (@~100mph that's just too fast for city driving).
with the -1 front, you're chain will wear out a little quicker and you may lose 1hp due to the higher constriction but that's it. you won't to buy a new chain for the sprocket change including and up to a -1/+2 change |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? lol! I was thinking more of shifting into 2nd at about 20 mph and then wot to see if it comes up at 7k or so.
Were you saying I won't need to buy a new chain for a -1 front change?
Do you know if our bikes have the speedometer at the front wheel so gear/rear tire changes won't change the indicated speed? |

| Re: 520 Conversion????? haha, okay. i'll try it today. it may @7k. (2nd gear would be easier for wheelie management....ooops did i say that outloud?)
yeah, you can use your stock 108link 530 chain with the -1 front. takes only about a half an hour to intall.
speed info come from electrical impulses (perhaps square pulses) from a speed sensor located near your gear box. you'd have to buy a speedo-healer if you wanted relative accuracy restored.
for me, i just subtract 5mph from my registered speed, if i'm ever concerned. |
