Used bike mileage?

What's the deal?

is it like cars when its more about how the bike was treated?

Is it bad to buy a bike with around 10k miles?

Some of my friends say dont buy used at all. Some of them say definately do it, dont be afraid of miles as long as it was kept well.

Any opinions?

Basically theres a real clean 02 F4i with 11k for around 4.5grand. I could get this bike tommorow if everything checks out.. but is that mileage to high? All the bikes that I want in this price ranger seem to have around 10k. The only way I can get a low mileage bike it seems.. is to spend another thousand dollars. I may just end up doing that depending on the advice I recieve.

11,000 miles? I have 60,000 on my 2000 cbr600f4 and it runs like the day I bought it, if not better since its broken in. Should be good for 10x that. Any defects from manufacturing would have been found by 11K, so its smooth riding for quite a while.

It all depends on how they've been treated and maintained...

Re: Used bike mileage?

Hmmm well dealerships and garages looking to buy 2nd hand bikes over here in the UK consider anything over 4-5000 per year a high mileage bike and kill the value accordingly regardless of condition of the fact it's a Honda or with full service history.
So many fair weather bikers these days that are unknowingly reducing the 'expected' mileages, that peeps who commute are bad people now by traveling all year round, and not just the sunny days ..... not that many in the UK

After all my bike is 10 years old and only had 27K on the clock, 2'700 per year so ..... about 10 days sunshine and 270 miles per trip .... that's about right for our weather!!

Re: Used bike mileage?

Mechanics have often said that 70k is a doddle to reach happily on any Honda that's looked after with regular oil changes every 4'000 ideally.

Re: Used bike mileage?

Sorry to be senior agua fria, but the quality of the owner is a big deal. 10K isn't much unless the bike has been stunted or otherwise abused, which I suspect happens frequently with sportbikes. Like anything else used caveat emptor.

Don't we all look for evidence of crash repairs and suspect gearbox and general drivetrain for signs of abuse?

Re: Used bike mileage?

Well...my bike is five years old and has 3060 miles so that is 612 miles per year.

However I bought it nine months ago with 691 showing on the clock so the first guy averaged 172 miles a year. He said that they all went on in the first two summers and then it sat for two years. Then I came along and rescued it from its boring life and it is finally starting to live a little.

we do or at least should do this yes, but to see more than just the little bit of the clutch cover you have to remove the fairings. In my case the exposed part looked fine, found the damaged/patched part when I took off the fairings to change the oil. All is fixed properly now though

Re: Used bike mileage?

I always look over the frame by the neck, and under the tank, subframe, rearsets for bends or cracks, forks for oil running or bends, wheels etc on my streetbikes, if im buying a stunter i just ride it make sure its tight and tracks straight and go to town

Re: Used bike mileage?

I bought my currant/first proper bike from a friend and I knew all the history, but I'm not sure I could buy a bike from a private seller I didn't know.
In the UK if you buy from a garage, by law you have a 90 day warranty for serious mechanical problems, so there's a kind of safety net, plus the rep of the garage itself.

I personally don't know nearly enough to be sure if I was buying a diamond or a lemon

Always nice when you buy from a friend you can trust

I used to ride my bike everyday whether it was snowing or sunny, just make sure you keep it clean and carry out the maintainence it starts everytime with one touch of the button and nowadays i take it out once in a blue moon for fun. It just had its 11 b day and it has only done 28000 which is really low i spose....
