| Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! Happened twice now, tearing up through the box then change up from 5th to 6th and no gear and suddenly red lining, ease off the throttle give the lever a nudge and it's in 6th??
The first time it happened I "Thought" I was in 6th and got carried away and somehow jumped past 6th into neutral but I can't recall exactly, but the 2nd time defiantly in 5th and missed 6th.
Now I'm very very worried that this is seriously bad news, as I understood 2nd to 6th are all meshed in a way that there's no gaps at all, so how can this be??
Appriciate your thoughts |

I was had similar problems (false neutrals?) between what I thought was 3rd and 4th at the track a few weeks ago. Happened about three times.... it was scary because at one point I was rolling on the throttle mid turn and I almost redlined.
My other transmission issue is that no matter how much I try.... I cant get the bike to go into seventh gear.

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! Is this what's called a "False Neutral" when you hit gaps between gears??
I've heard the term and thought it was the Green light on the dash but stalling cos it's still in gear??
I can't find 7th either |

Right done some investigation after talking to the friend who sold me the bike, I didn't fully understand when he told me about 'False neutrals' so yes I was being far too girly and need to adjust the gear lever down a little bit.
Cheers |

Cheers | I'm sorry I must be missing something. You need to adjust the gear lever down a little because why again? |

If I had been more firm with the gear lever it wouldn't have happened, according to research on the web, it generally happens because the lever is a little too high for the individual. Adjust it down a fraction and I can be more precise with the up changes.

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! I've been on Hondas (dirt and street) since Carter was in office and every Honda I've ridden can be coerced into "false neutrals" between 3-4, 4-5 and / or 5-6. I've always addressed this as Mr. Trigger said; lower the Shift Lever one spline notch or so. It always seemed to fix the problem, which is a little laziness on shifts (in my case); lowering the Shift Lever makes for a more deliberate shift. I've always wondered if switching to a GP style shift pattern (push down to go up in gears) would also minimize this problem...hmm. It's somewhat interesting; I've never experienced this on down shifts... |

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! You have three shift forks. At least one is bent. Bad. Gear dogs are sure to go next. Shift forks don't cost too much. But there's a lot more gears and they add up. Get it fixed soon! |

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! Wow Dat, that's some pretty impressive diagnostics. My 954 exhibited the exact same behavior several times when I bought it new, I lowered my shift lever one spline tooth and the problem never surfaced again. I wonder if lowering the shift lever somehow straightened my bent shift forks? It’s the only conclusion I can deduce…or, it’s as simple as a short shift from my foot. I personally would first make the free investment of lowering the shift lever, then; if that doesn't fix the issue, spend the bucks on buying new parts. |

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! Hello
we had this problem on our sidecar outfit and we found the problem was the amount of play in the gear shaft ( the bit that goes right through the engine)
the shaft when pushed/pulled should have some play ie 2/3 mm but ours had about 6mm! we took of the circlip on the end slipped on a washer to take the slack up and wey hey no probs....for now!
hope this helps

| Re: Missing the gear between 5th & 6th, somehow hits neutral?? Help!! Well since I stopped being all girly with the upshift into 6th and adjusted the gear lever, all has been sweet. The box is fine just user error |
