Speedometer Probz...

Hey guys and gals...I'm sittin on an '01 CBR 600 F4I...I went for a ride the other day...(just pulled it outta winter) and my speedometer was working for a couple of minutes. Out of nowhere it shut down and went straight to 0 and wouldn't move. All of my gauge looked right, i.e. no missing LED or anything like that, but it just wouldn't move. So I finished my ride and started to take it home....pulled into the parking lot and it started working again. What in the world could be the problem there? I haven't taken it in yet..thought i'd check with you guys first. Anything to try would be appreciated. Thanx again.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

Could be the speed sensor wire is loose or the speed sensor itself is toast. I had a similar problem a while back on my 900RR and ended up replacing the speed sensor to solve the problem.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

Yup, it's got to do with the speed sensor itself, or the speed sensor wire that goes to the gauges. Check the plug to see that it is clean and well engaged. I think the speed sensor wire could be pink, or pink/green.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

is it the same as I read on the 929?? on the front tire?? Where exactly is it located?? I just priced a new one...and I have NO PROBLEM spending that money, compared to having a speeding ticket, lol. Thanx again for all your help guys. Back in the garage this afternoon to set out for a wonderful riding season.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

If it's the same as the 900 it's on top of the transmission. Should be approx. dead center with a wire coming off it up to the wiring harness on the right hand side by the seat.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

Hello guys and gals...well work has been hectic for the past couple of weeks and haven't had a chance to tinker on "Roxy". Anyways...just thought that i'd let everyone know what happened with an update. I called my dealer...asked them some questions and over the phone he immediately jumped to replacing my entire dash...for a measley $591.62..psssh no thanx man. So i started poking around myself. After checking under the seat to get the wiring route I checked my connections one good time before I actually spent any money. Opened up the sleeve and low and behold....everything was GREEN! Corrosion, corrosion, corrosion. I sprayed some contact cleaner on 'em, polished the tips with sandpaper, and then put some electrical grease on it. Took it for a 10 minute ride and....so far so wonderful! Everything is working great, for now, lol. Just thought i'd let everyone know to always make sure that you check your connections before spending any money....definitely worth the time, definitely worth the money.

Good day all.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

^^^ when you replaced the sensor, did it go on sometimes and go off sometimes or was it just dead.
My speedo will sit at zero but if i take a 15 min ride it will turn on for about 3 mins total then shut off???
could that be a sensor problem?? or would you say connections??
thanks

Re: Speedometer Probz...

My speedo needle would jump when i'd rev the engine in neutral. The most annoying part is it had a lag when I'd accelerate hard and it wouldn't register any speed past 130 kph.

Re: Speedometer Probz...

i totally agree! That was the first conclusion he jumped to, after I had already mentioned a speed sensor to him...He asked me if I had checked with parts...I replied no...he then told me to talk to parts and said hold on a sec i'll transfer you...and that's when my jaw dropped at a $600 amount that i could live without for a little while, lol. Dealers...tsk tsk tsk

Re: Speedometer Probz...

I'm having the same problem. The speedometer will work when I first start riding and then all of a sudden it will go to 0. Then it will come back on for a while, then back to 0. Also, sometimes the red FI light will come on.
